  • Russell Luepker was quoted by WebMD regarding a study that found a diet rich in olive oil may lower the risk of having a heart attack or stroke, or dying from cardiovascular disease in the month after heart surgery.
  • Toben Nelson was quoted in the Marshall Independent in an editorial that advocates against legislation that would lower Minnesota’s drinking age to 18. The quote was taken from Nelson’s original interview with the Star Tribune.
  • Rhonda Jones-Webb was interviewed on WCCO-Radio and MPR regarding her research which found that alcohol, specifically malt liquor, was promoted more in African-American, inner-city communities. Her research will also be mentioned on KSTP-TV News tonight at 10 p.m.

  • Rhonda Jones-Webb was quoted in The Boston Globe, The Pioneer Press, and on Minnesota Public Radio about her research which found that found that poor neighborhoods with high concentrations of African-Americans had significantly greater than average numbers of liquor stores, 40-ounce bottles of malt liquor in coolers, and storefront ads promoting malt liquor.
  • Russell Luepker was quoted on WebMD.com about Japanese research which reports that warm sauna treatments may help heart failure patients live longer.

  • Rhonda Jones-Webb was quoted in the West Central Tribune about her research which found that poor neighborhoods with high concentrations of African-Americans had high numbers of liquor stores, malt liquor, and storefront ads promoting malt liquor. The article was distributed by the Associated Press.

  • Mark Pereira was quoted in Northern News in Ontario about his research which found that teens who eat breakfast daily tend to have a lower BMI, exercise more often, and eat a healthier diet than those who skip breakfast.
  • Daheia Barr-Anderson, School of Public Health and School of Nursing, will be on WCCO-TV live on Monday morning at 6:10 a.m. discussing her Project EAT research about teens who have a TV in their bedroom.

  • Daheia Barr-Anderson, School of Public Health and School of Nursing, was interviewed on WCCO-radio, Minnesota Public Radio, Minnesota News Network, WCCO-TV, and KSTP News about her research which found that teens who have TVs in their bedrooms are less likely to engage in healthy behaviors. She was also quoted in multiple articles including U.S. News & World Report, WebMD, United Press International, HealthDay News, Reuters and the study was also the feature of today’s Body Talk, the blog written by the health writers of the Star Tribune. The study was also mentioned on the Web site of the Washington Post, CBC in Canada, and on CNN. She will be interviewed on FOX 9 TV tonight at 5 p.m.
  • Michael Osterholm was quoted in the South China Morning Post regarding programs that are needed to counteract a bird flu epidemic.

  • Daheia Barr-Anderson, School of Public Health and School of Nursing, was quoted in Canada’s National Post about her research which found that teens who have a TV in their bedroom are less likely to engage in healthy behaviors; the story was distributed by Reuter’s. She also appeared on Fox 9 News last night discussing the research.

  • Michael Osterholm was quoted in an article in The Canadian Press about a recent study which found that closing schools during a flu pandemic might slow spread of the disease but probably won't have as big an impact on overall cases as some pandemic planners hope.

  • Jeffrey Mandel and John Finnegan were quoted in the Minnesota Daily regarding a bill passed Thursday by the Minnesota House of Representatives that would fund the University’s study of mesothelioma among Iron Range miners. The funding for the study was also discussed by KARE 11, Minnesota Public Radio.

The story also discussed the controversy over the hiring of health science professors Francois Sainfort and Julie Jacko.
