The Health Careers Center is looking for public health students interested in sharing their own "career stories" along with information and reflections on the field of public health. During this very informal gathering you would be joined at lunch by some very eager high school students participating in the HCI -- Health Careers Investigators program. This "networking lunch" will be Wednesday, July 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. in room 2-122 MCB. If you are available and interested please contact Scott Simpson from the Health Careers Center at simps132@umn.edu.

Nearly two-thirds of Minnesota physicians believe a single-payer universal health insurance system would provide the best value for Minnesota patients, according to research led by Dr. Jim Hart. Hart discusses the study in a recent episode of Public Health Moment.

The SPH Center for Public Health Preparedness (CPHP) has released "Disaster in Franklin County: A Public Health Simulation." In this free online training tool the learner will assume the perspective of various public health professionals responding to a natural disaster. They will make decisions on behalf of a county public health director, a public health nurse, an environmental health specialist, and other public health professionals.

SPH Events

The National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course will be held July 25-27 in the Cowles Auditorium at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute. This continuing education program focuses on the improvement of maternal and infant health through the delivery of risk-appropriate, high-quality nutrition services.

The Center for Leadership Education in Maternal and Child Health is offering a two-day conference on culture and health, featuring several nationally known speakers, on July 24-25 at the Humphrey Institute. Students, and others who have financial need, can register at a reduced fee (or free; contact Jan Pearson at pearson@epi.umn.edu). The Ninth Annual MCH Summer Institute is titled, "Addressing Health Disparities: Culture, Communications and Health."

This year's Summer Institute will focus on the role of health communications in reducing health disparities. Keynote speakers and in-depth breakout sessions will focus on culture and health literacy, the implications of communications inequality, the health communication needs of specific communities of color, and new strategies to increase communication effectiveness. Important Note: This year, for the first time, we are offering this Institute in conjunction with the annual National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course. SPH adjunt professor Tor Dahl will speak at WorldFuture: Fostering Hope and Vision. The conference will take place in Minneapolis July 29-31. Dahl's presentation will take place Tuesday, July 31, 12:15-1:45 and is entitled "The knowledge Economy: Peace and Prosperity through Productivity."
