Visit the Community Involvement Fair and learn how you can make a difference in the Twin Cities community. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Great Hall at Coffman Union. The fair will provide students a chance to learn about local volunteer and internship opportunities. Students will also have an opportunity to talk to representatives from more than 90 organizations. Spring semester and summer opportunities will be promoted at this fair.

SPH Dean John Finnegan, chief financial officer Joe Weisenburger and Career Services program director Barb Laporte will host an hour-long forum addressing student financial concerns. A discussion followed by a Q&A session will be on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 3:30 p.m., in Mayo 3-125. Possible topics include: school goal of keeping tuition increases as low as possible; public health tuition and finances at other schools; analysis of tuition, living expenses, indebtedness, and predicted salary for SPH students; and availability of scholarships and loans. Refreshments will be served.

Call for volunteers for Jim Rothenberger Memorial. On Thursday, Feb. 12, the SPH will host a memorial for beloved professor Jim Rothenberger from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Mayo Memorial Auditorium. Due to the anticipated amount of people attending the memorial, volunteers are needed to assist with various activities. Volunteer opportunities are:

  • Set-up — Prepare the event space — 1 person needed
  • Greeters — Welcome guests — several people needed
  • Gift Table Attendants — Watch over gift table and answer questions — 2 people needed
  • Tack Board Attendants — Assist guests with tacks and answer questions — 4 people needed

Student News

Now is the time for students to make plans for their field experience. Join the Student Services Center on Tuesday, Feb. 10, to learn about field experience prospects and discover funding opportunities. A panel discussion will be led by second-year students in the SPH who have already completed their field experiences. In addition, a list of recently released positions by local, national, and international organizations will be provided. The session will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in Mayo 3-100. Refreshments will be served. Please register by e-mailing sphfield@umn.edu or via the SPH Facebook page.

The Feb. 15 deadline for scholarships to support student field experience is fast approaching.

Applications are now being accepted for the Katie Evans Memorial Scholarship until Sunday, Feb. 15. The scholarship is a potential funding source for field experiences. The scholarship aims to "create and support educational and service opportunities in the fields of public health and human service.”

2009 SPH Commencement. The School of Public Health’s commencement will take place on Monday, May 18, at Northrop Memorial Auditorium. Students should register if they plan to:

  • Receive their degree within a year of commencement.
  • And/or walk at the commencement ceremony

All graduates will have their name included in the program, whether they attend commencement or not. Students must register by Friday, March 12. For questions call Nichole Axtman at 6-9303 or e-mail mart1047@umn.edu.

Mini Medical School Spring 2009, “New Frontiers in Medicine.” This biannual five-class endeavor will feature health topics spanning new frontiers in medicine. The series runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Mondays, Feb. 23 through March 23. Cost is $75 (includes binder and printouts of PowerPoint presentations), or $60 (paperless, with ability to download presentations). For questions, e-mail minimed@umn.edu.

The National Mentoring and Fellowship Program of the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health is seeking applications from pre-doctoral and advanced masters’ students interested in careers in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health research. The program connects students with expert faculty mentors from a national network. Applications for pre-doctoral mentoring are accepted on a rolling basis until Feb. 15. Contact Aimee Van Wagenen, Program Manager of the Center for Population Research in LGBT at mentoring@lgbtpopcenter.org with questions.

University Counseling and Consulting Services currently has openings in its Grief Group for students who have lost parents or siblings. The group meets on Tuesdays from 4:40 to 6:10 p.m. Interested students can contact Sarra Beckham-Chasnoff 4¿3675 or at beckh002@umn.edu to set up an orientation appointment.

The deadlines to submit abstracts for the 2009 APHA annual meeting ranges from Feb. 9 to 13. The American Public Health Association is now accepting contributed abstracts for the 137th APHA Annual Meeting and Exposition, which will be held Nov. 7-11 in Philadelphia. The theme of the meeting is “Water and Public Health: the 21st Century Challenge.” Abstracts must be submitted online.

Come to the biggest student career fair in Minnesota on Monday, Feb. 9. Over 200 organizations will be recruiting for hundreds of jobs and internships. The daylong event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center in downtown Minneapolis. Check the job fair site to see which organizations are attending. The fair is free and open to all U of M undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alumni.

The University’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs will be hosting a series of information sessions regarding graduate programs in Public Policy, Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy and Urban and Regional Planning. The information sessions will take place in Room 205 Humphrey Center (Freeman Commons). Beverages and pizza will be served. Faculty and current students will speak briefly about each degree program and will also be available to answer questions. This event is free and open to the public.

School News

SPH professor Michael Osterholm will discuss, “Coldwater Stream and Tallgrass Prairie Restoration in the Driftless Area: Challenging Current Programs and Practices,” on Monday, Feb. 2. The seminar will be held at 2:30 p.m. in 110 Green Hall on the St. Paul Campus.

Students seeking a unique educational opportunity should consider enrolling in the SPH Global Public Health Institute at St. John's Medical College in Bangalore, India. The session will be held March 16-24. Global Health India provides an opportunity for students from the United States and from India to meet together with faculty from the University of Minnesota and educational institutions in India to examine the impact of globalization on health and identify strategies that support a healthy and productive global workforce. Toben Nelson will discuss, “Understanding Overweight/Obesity among College Students in Context” on Friday, Feb. 6. The seminar, sponsored by the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 364 of WBOB. For more information contact Carol Raichert at 5-1836.

A Feb. 12 public memorial service will honor SPH professor James Rothenberger for his many contributions to students, faculty, staff, and others during a career that spanned more than three decades. The memorial will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Mayo Memorial Auditorium. As many of you know, Jim Rothenberger passed away due to complications from kidney disease and an infection on Dec. 8. In spite of his health challenges, he was a tireless and devoted instructor, teaching an average of 15 courses a year.

The Health Disparities Working Group will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Attendees will hear from SPH Professor Jean Forster and Kris Rhodes about the American Indian Community Tobacco Projects. Rhodes is the senior coordinator of the program. The meeting will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. in Mayo A301. Please register to Jennie Anderson at ander422@umn.edu.
