Harambee is tonight. It's a time of unity, celebration, and sharing the unique cultural attributes that empower everyone's personalities. Make plans to attend a Harambee gathering on Monday, March 10, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Performances begin at 6 p.m. in Coffman Union. Questions? Email chip@umn.edu or Thuy Doan at doanx034@umn.edu.

The SPH Student Senate is supporting the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life and needs student support. Students who want to participate in the April 18-19 event and who pay the $10 registration fee before Friday, March 14, will get a T-shirt. Questions? contact Emily Wang at wang0675@umn.edu.

The Feb. 1 student poster training session in preparation for SPH Student Research Day is now available online. The online session, presented by Michael Oakes, will provide information on how to create, present, and print posters for the April 11 event. The deadline to submit abstracts is midnight tonight (March 10).

The Bio-Medical Library is soliciting AHC student input on potential renovation plans for the library's second floor. Please provide feedback on a short, online survey asking about student preferences for computer and group study spaces.

Calling Volunteers for National Public Health Week. The SPH is hosting several events during NPHW, April 7-11, and student volunteers are needed to ensure the events are successful. Volunteers will be presented with networking opportunities, SPH-themed gear, and beneficial experience. Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Film Festival, April 7-9 and 11, greeting, popping popcorn, hanging up posters, etc.
  • Alumni Board Meeting, April 10, greeting, networking, set-up, clean-up, etc.
  • Alumni Reunion; Major-Specific Social Hour, April 10, greeting, networking, set-up, clean-up, etc.
  • Alumni and Friends Scholarship Gala, April 10, greeting, networking, set-up, clean-up, etc.

Applications are now being accepted for Fall 2008 enrollment in the Health Journalism M.A. program. Students interested in health communication will learn the fundamentals of writing about health topics for different audiences in different formats, as well as health campaign development. Those interested in health journalism will learn to evaluate claims from health, medical, and scientific sources. The third annual global health course, "Clinical Tropical, Migrant and Travel Medicine," is being offered beginning in June. The intensive training course designed for physicians and health care providers is aimed at those working in immigrant health, travelers' health, and tropical and global health.

Take advantage of a community service opportunity and receive affordable housing. The Project for Pride in Living (PPL) program is accepting applications for fall 2008 for housing and tutoring opportunities in south Minneapolis. Students will work as one-to-one tutors and mentors with two children and receive affordable student-friendly housing. All sites are either $225 or $255 per month with utilities included, free laundry and WiFi. Some units are available to lease on June 1. Questions? School News

Tune in to watch the compelling documentary, "Health Revolutionary: The Life and Work of Ancel Keys," on the Big 10 Network. Keys, who founded the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene at the University of Minnesota in 1940, was once dubbed "Mr. Cholesterol" for his work in defining the relationship between the fat composition of diet and serum cholesterol level. He died in 2004 at the age of 100. Keys was also known for developing K-rations, a food source used by the military in World War II and later. The documentary will air at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 and at 5 a.m. on Monday, March 31. The Big 10 Network is available through Dish Network and DirecTV satellite television services.

The SPH is hosting a preview day for prospective students on Thursday, March 13 in Mayo 3-100. Faculty, students, and staff are invited to stop by from 10:40 to 10:55 a.m. to meet and greet this group of future public health colleagues. "The Impacts of the State Children's Health Insurance Program on Children Who Enroll: Findings from Ten States," will be the topic of discussion on Thursday, April 3 during a seminar presented by the Division of Health Policy and Management. The keynote speaker is Genevieve Kenney, principal research associate and health economist at the Urban Institute. The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in 3-100 Mayo.
