National Public Health WeekStudents are invited to attend an afternoon of special events designed to recognize National Public Health Week. On Thursday, April 10, the School of Public Health is sponsoring an Alumni Society Reunion Kickoff that begins at 3 p.m., an Alumni Reunion Major-Specific Networking gathering that begins at 5 p.m. and an Alumni & Friends Scholarship Gala that begins at 6 p.m. Each of the events will be held at the Nicollet Island Inn and the Nicollet Island Pavilion. Student tickets for the gala are $30, and the other events are free. Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, is the gala¿s keynote speaker. Questions? Call Nichole at 6-9303.

Students who have already completed a field experience are invited to present their work in poster presentations from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10 during the 2008 Alumni & Friends Scholarship Gala. Students who are selected to present will enjoy a complimentary dinner. Space is limited, so please indicate your interest no later than Wednesday, March 26 by e-mailing Amenah Babar at babar002@umn.edu.

Student News

Join Barb Laporte of the Career Resource Center for a session on interviewing and negotiating strategies. She will introduce InterviewStream, a new tool where students can practice and hone their interviewing skills in front of a webcam. The session will take place in Mayo A301 on Wednesday, March 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The SPH Student Senate has three grants available for students. Visit the student senate website for grant applications and instructions. Send electronic grant applications to morri543@umn.edu or put hard copies in the student senate mailbox located in the student services office (Mayo D-305). Grant applications must be received by Friday, April 4.

A discussion on health disparities in the Asian and Pacific Islander community will be held from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on Monday, March 24, Moos 2-580. The keynote speaker is Emily Li-wen Wang, board chair of the Minnesota Asian/American Health Coalition. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available.

Students planning to participate in SPH commencement can take advantage of an extended deadline to sign up for the festivities. The new deadline is Monday, March 24. Questions? Contact Nichole Marthaler at mart1047@umn.edu.

School News

Tune in to watch the compelling documentary, "Health Revolutionary: The Life and Work of Ancel Keys," on the Big 10 Network. Keys, who founded the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene at the University of Minnesota in 1940, was once dubbed "Mr. Cholesterol" for his work in defining the relationship between the fat composition of diet and serum cholesterol level. He died in 2004 at the age of 100. Keys was also known for developing K-rations, a food source used by the military in World War II and later. The documentary will air at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 and at 5 a.m. on Monday, March 31. The Big 10 Network is available through Dish Network and DirecTV satellite television services.

"The Impacts of the State Children's Health Insurance Program on Children Who Enroll: Findings from Ten States," will be the topic of discussion on Thursday, April 3 during a seminar presented by the Division of Health Policy and Management. The keynote speaker is Genevieve Kenney, principal research associate and health economist at the Urban Institute. The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in 3-100 Mayo.
