SPHere Spotlight

The End of the Year Survey launches on Wednesday, April 22. Each year, Student Services relies on students to help them improve the SPH by participating in the survey. As a result of student feedback last year, the school improved the printing capabilities in the SPHere, added more online courses, created more family-centered social events, and hired additional career services staff. Student Services needs your ideas and feedback, so please take the time to complete the survey, which will be e-mailed to all students.

The SPH Student Senate invites you to attend three workshops that promise to enhance your learning experience. The workshops include: Literature Review with Judy Garrard, Poster-Making Session with Toben Nelson, and Public Service Announcement with Nichole Axtman and Wobo Bekwelem. The sessions will be held on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Each workshop is 45 minutes long and will be held in room 303 of Coffman. Food and refreshments will be served. Students do not have to attend all three workshops.

Attend the SPH Career Services workshop at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, in the Student Services Office, D 305. Learn about strategies for finding a job within the federal government or in nonprofit organizations. Learn about jobs that would allow you to gain new skills and succeed in a difficult economy. Student News

Congratulations to the incoming SPH Student Senate officers. Ania Urban was elected president, Erika Vetta was elected vice president, and Meghan Mason was elected secretary.

PHAP student Jason Wahlman won first place in the Kaiser Family Foundation essay contest in the graduate student category. More than 300 students submitted entries that offered advice to President Barack Obama on what he should pursue as a priority in health reform. The winning essays will be posted on the KaiserEDU.org website.

Jump Start Your Job Search! Join Barb Laporte, director of Career Services for a career conversation on networking—what is it, and why is it important in the job search. The discussion will cover various networking situations, including using online social networking tools as part of your job search strategy. The event will be at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, in the Career Resource Center (D305 Mayo).

Students are invited to join the SPH team supporting the MS Society of Minnesota. On Sunday, May 3, the SPH team will walk 6.5 miles in support of the MS Society. There is no obligation to raise funds and the only time commitment is on the day of the walk. Directions for online registration and making a donation are below. Apply for the Carol E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship until Thursday, April 30. The scholarship is available to female students 28 years or older who have had five-year or longer breaks in their post-secondary education and have a demonstrated financial need. A "Careers in Consulting" panel discussion will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 20, in room 402 of Walter Library. The panel will discuss career opportunities in the consulting industry. This free event is open to all University students.

The 5th Annual HARAMBEE art and performance show, hosted by the Academic Health Center Multicultural Society, will be held April 22, 4:30 p.m. The Food and Art Gallery begins at 6 p.m. Performances Location: Coffman Memorial Union Theatre. A new interdisciplinary graduate minor, Prevention Science, will be offered, beginning fall 2009. This new interdisciplinary minor spans six colleges and 11 departments, giving students for the first time the opportunity to pursue a masters or doctoral minor in Prevention Science. Learn more about the program from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, in 325 Ed Sciences.

Are you a returned Peace Corps Volunteer? SPH Career Services is collecting names of students for a fall SPH Peace Corps reunion and information session. If you served in the Peace Corps, please e-mail Alicen Spaulding, spau0016@umn.edu with your name, contact information, and where you served. Watch for details about the reunion early next fall.

A new course, PubH 6811 Health Disparities Research, Measures, Methods and Data will be offered in the fall. The two-credit class, taught by Kathleen Call and Pamela Jo Johnson, will meet from 11:15 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. on Fridays. The goal of this course is to explore methods for conducting research on health disparities using publicly available data sources. School News

The Bell Museum and Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy presents an Earth Day free screening of the film, A Sense of Wonder, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, at the Bell Museum Auditorium. Based on the life of environmentalist Rachel Carson, the documentary-style film examines Carson’s final year of life, during which she battled cancer, an unexpectedly high public profile and backlash from her critics. A panel discussion featuring SPH professor William Toscano and experts from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Healthy Legacy campaign will follow.

"Planning Communities as if People Eat: The Role of Urban Planning in Building Sustainable Food Systems" by Samina Raja of the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, will take place Friday, April 24, 10:35-11:30a.m., in 335 Borlaug Hall. The Division of Health Policy and Management Work in Progress Seminar Series continues with "Part 4: Population Perspective." The following SPH faculty will participate: Presenter: George Maldonado. Discussants: Bryan Dowd, Robert Kane, Richard MacLehose. The forum will take place on Wednesday, April 22, 12:15-1:15 p.m. in Mayo D325/D327. Attendees are encouraged to read the following article before the session: Maldonado, George, and Sander Greeland. "Estimating Causal Effects." Light snacks and soft drinks will be provided.

"The Struggles to Produce the Surgeon General’s 1964 Report and a National Policy on Smoking and Health: Actions (and Inactions) of America’s Federal Health Agency," is the topic of Jon Harkness’ discussion on Friday, April 24. Harkness, an adjunct assistant professor of the History of Medicine, is the featured speaker during the division seminar sponsored by the Department of Epidemiology and Community Health. The seminar will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 364 WBOB. For questions call Carol Raichert at 5-1836.

2009 Summer Public Health Institute May 26-June 12. This year’s Public Health Institute features 45 courses emphasizing theory to application across practice and interest areas in public health. Participants can build or expand professional knowledge and expertise; learn best practices; broaden career options; network with experts and colleagues; and explore new areas of interests. Courses are available for graduate credit or professional continuing education hours.
