"Rethinking Public Health in a Reformed Health System" will be discussed by Anne Haddix, chief policy officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, in Cowles Auditorium at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. This talk explores the changing role of public health in the face of dramatic change:
- How will public health provide the community and society level actions that prevent such behaviors?
- How will public health leverage available community resources to close the gap between coverage and utilization in underserved populations?
- And, finally, what role will public health have in monitoring health and progress in the population as well as maintaining awareness of emerging health threats?
Make plans to attend an informal meeting hosted by Professor William Toscano to help develop ideas for a symposium lecture series that will begin in the fall. The meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, in 1250 Mayo. Lunch will be provided. All students in the division are invited to attend to help generate lecture topic ideas. PubH 6390: Epidemiologic and Modeling Methods for Infectious Diseases will be offered during the May session. This new course will introduce students interested in infectious diseases to the use of simulation models for understanding concepts in infectious disease epidemiology. Through hands-on experience and using human papillomaviruses (HPV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) as examples, students will learn methods for developing simulation models that replicate the natural history of infections and for evaluating the impact of primary and secondary prevention strategies. Are you ready to take the Public Health Certification Exam? A new course at the 2009 Public Health Institute reviews the five basic core competencies of public health practice included on the certification exam: biostatistics, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences. The course is geared for graduates of Council on Education for Public Health-accredited schools of public health, such as the SPH, or anyone preparing to take the exam. It includes test-taking strategies and other support tools and services to help you prepare.

"On Becoming a Local Consumer," is the topic of the final forum in the Minnesota Public Health Association’s series "Food and Public Health: A Sampler." Make plans to attend the discussion from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Friday, May 8, at the Minnesota Department of Health, Snelling Office Park, Mississippi Room, 1645 Energy Park Drive in St. Paul. Patty Bowler from the Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support, Brenda Langton from Cafe Brenda and Spoonriver, and Claudia Rhodes from the Seward Co-op will explore Minnesota’s options for becoming a local consumer. Ed Ehlinger, Boynton Health Service, University of Minnesota will moderate this forum. Seating is limited and registration is encouraged. Breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. The cost is $5 for students and free parking is available.

A Roundtable on Health Disparities Public Meeting: State and Local Policy Initiatives to Reduce Health Disparities will be held on Monday, May 11. The roundtable will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Allina Commons (Minnesota Room), 2925 Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. The workshop will highlight successful state and local programs, present ideas for successful cross-sectorial partnerships, describe promising practices across state and local efforts and discuss strategies for determining success at the state and local levels. Registration is free and open to the public, and you are invited to register online now. Complimentary parking and lunch will be provided.

The Office of Diversity and Engagement is encouraging you to participate in the 2009 Minnesota AIDS Walk, "Every Step You Take Makes a Difference." Volunteers are needed on Saturday, May 16 in the evening to set up and for various shifts on Sunday, May 17 at Minnehaha Park.

Save the date for the 38th Annual Workshops in Clinical Hypnosis scheduled for June 4-6. The event will be held at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Plymouth, Minn. The workshop is a skill-development based training for health care clinicians to enrich their therapeutic communication abilities. "The Unknown-Unknowns of Confounding and Selection Bias, or, what you never wanted but needed to know about confounding and didn’t even know to ask" will be discussed on Friday, May 8, during the Epidemiology and Community Health Division seminar. Ian Shrier, associate professor, SMBD-Jewish General Hospital, McGill University, Montreal, is the speaker. The seminar will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 364 of WBOB. The SPH Roundtable, Public Health 2050: The Impact of Technology on the Field of Public Health, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Thursday, June 4, in the Union Theater at Coffman. SPH professors Julie Jacko and B.R. Simon Rosser will serve as moderators for the event.

2009 Summer Public Health Institute May 26-June 12. This year’s Public Health Institute features 45 courses emphasizing theory to application across practice and interest areas in public health. Participants can build or expand professional knowledge and expertise; learn best practices; broaden career options; network with experts and colleagues; and explore new areas of interests. Courses are available for graduate credit or professional continuing education hours.
