SPH Orientation and Warm-Up sessions are just around the corner. Students can choose which events you would like to attend. Please remember that you must attend the SPH School-wide Orientation as well as your Major Orientation on Aug. 23 (more info on that below). Each additional event will give you a great opportunity to meet more of your classmates and learn valuable information about the school.

SPHere Locker Notice: If you have a locker in the Student SPHere, you must clean it out immediately. As a reminder, when checking out a locker, you signed an agreement stating, “I agree to clean out my locker by Aug. 1, 2007. If I fail to do so, I understand that my lock will be severed and my contents removed (they may be claimed at the Student Services Center for one month following semester end).” If you have questions or concerns, please visit the Student Services Center in D305 Mayo.
The annual Equivalency (Test-Out) Examination for all SPH core course areas has been scheduled for August. Please note the following information:

The Division of Health Policy and Management is offeringa special short-term math preparation course Aug. 13-16, 9:00-noon. PubH 3810, Math Review for Public Health (1 credit). Prerequisites: Linear algebra, basic calculus.This course is a review of basic calculus and linear algebra. It is presumed that the student has had exposure to these topics through previous coursework. The topics covered include differentials, integral calculus, exponentials and logarithms, matrix algebra, and introduction to mathematical models. The course includes lecture, and working mathematical problems as class exercises.
WANTED: Public Health Students. Need extra spending money? The U of M Usability Services Team is looking for students from the SPH to try out the usability of various University Web page designs in the summer and during Fall Semester. No Web experience necessary. Typically evaluation sessions last 60–90 minutes. Days vary. On-campus evaluation appointments will be available over the next several months. Send an email with your name and phone number to WEB-USABILITY@LISTS.UMN.EDU and mention this announcement. $35 cash for most participant categories -- plus free snacks!

SPH Events
Functional Exercises will be held August 7-8 at the Ramada Minneapolis Northwest in Brooklyn Park. Step-by-Step Functional Exercises Design from Concept to After Action Report/Improvement Plan. Whether you are working with a consultant or designing your own exercise, you need to be aware of how a functional exercise is developed, constructed, and evaluated using Homeland Security Exercise Evaluation Program guidelines. The course is free of charge, however early registration is recommended due to limited space.

Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is sponsoring an educational event in Minneapolis' Loring Park from Sept. 27-Sept. 30. The event, "A Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City" is an outdoor, interactive educational exhibit made up of the actual structures and materials you would find in a real refugee camp. The exhibit asks visitors to imagine experiencing what it is like to be one of the world's 33 million refugees or internally displaced persons forced to leave their homes because of war or conflict. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
