The First Annual Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives Symposium: Critical Issues in Research and Public Policy will occur on Sept. 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cowles Auditorium, Hubert H Humphrey Center. Nationally and internationally renowned speakers will present state-of-the art science on four highly controversial topics related to the effects of food consumption on human health: food processing, consumption of organic foods, high fructose corn syrup, and antibiotic use in animals.

Student News

Postdoctoral fellowship opportunity at Institut Pasteur in Paris. Institut Pasteur houses 130 research labs devoted to the basic science of improving global public health with an emphasis on infectious diseases. The award includes a $55,000 fellowship plus $15,000 in bench fees to support the research. The award totals $75,000 per year for a term of three years and is not renewable. The next applications deadline is Friday, Sept. 11.

Student volunteers are needed to serve on the SPH film festival committee. Members of the committee will meet monthly beginning in September to organize the SPH’s annual National Public Health Week Film Festival which will be held the first week of April 2010. Would you like to study abroad in South America? Farm to Table Study Program: Uruguay will explore the food system from farm-to-table while considering aspects of animal welfare and health, food safety, and public health. Facilitated discussions with key government and private sector leaders and site visits along the food supply chain are designed to integrate knowledge and skills in food safety, animal health, and public health. Registration is on a firstcome first-serve basis and is limited to 20 participants.

Scholarship Opportunities for Doctoral Dissertations on Healthy Community Design or on Climate Change are available through the 2009 Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH)/Center for Disease Control (CDC) Environmental Health Scholarship Program. Up to six scholarships of $25,000 each will be awarded to students currently pursuing their doctorate degrees. Hard-copy application materials must be received by ASPH on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, before 5 p.m. (Eastern). Questions may be directed to TrainingPrograms@asph.org.

University of Minnesota: Simulations and Exercises for Educational Effectiveness (U-SEEE) is accepting proposals for a pilot research program until Sept. 8. The program provides funding of up to $15,000 for public health systems research related to enhancing the usefulness of education and training that build the capacity of the public health preparedness system.

The Global Health and Innovation Conference presented by Unite for Sight is accepting abstracts for presentation. The conference is for anyone interested or involved in international health and development, social entrepreneurship, public health, eye care, medicine, nonprofits, philanthropy, microfinance, human rights, anthropology, health policy, advocacy, public service, environmental health, and education.

There will be no EpiCH Shuttle service during the summer. Service resumes Tuesday, Sept. 8. The mail runs to ECRC, Mayo, and HSRC will continue at their regular times.

Pollution Prevention and Energy Efficiency Solutions presentations will be held on Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at McNamara Alumni Center, Ski-U-Mah Room. “All in the Family: Fetal Effects of Maternal Overweight and Obesity,” presented by the National Children’s Study Speakers’ Series, will be held on Sept. 9 from 3-4 p.m., at the Wilder Center in St. Paul. The Deborah E. Powell Center will present its 6th Annual Women’s Health Research Conference on Monday, Sept. 21 at the McNamara Alumni Center. This year’s theme is “A Focus on Women¿s Mental Health and Neurosciences.” Poster abstracts will be accepted on any topics regarding women’s health or gender specific research across the lifespan. The deadline for award consideration is Wednesday, July 15 and Monday, Aug. 3 to be recognized in the program.

26th Annual American Association for the History of Nursing Conference will be held Sept. 24-27 at The Saint Paul Hotel. The conference offers an opportunity to exchange knowledge about the profession of nursing, and its impact across time, populations, and geography. Keynote speaker Steven Berlin Johnson is the best-selling author of six books on the intersection of science, technology, and personal experience. Participants are asked to register online.
