New student odrientation continues today, Monday, Aug. 25: Learn about financial aid and career resources, get introduced to the Academic Health Center, get a “real-world” perspective from second-year students and SPH alumni, and meet faculty and learn about their research.

Join the Minnesota Technical Assistance Program (MnTAP) student interns as they present the results of their summer pollution prevention projects. The program will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, in the Ski-U-Mah Room at the McNamara Alumni Center. Register by calling 612-624-1300 or by sending an e-mail to speck002@umn.edu.
Visit the SPH booth at the Minnesota State Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 27. The booth, located in the Crossroads building, will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature demonstrations on DNA, State Fair food, and other public health topics. Visitors will have an opportunity to express their opinions about public health in an SPH vodcast (video blogging). The video footage from the vodcast will be edited and made available on the SPH website. SPH trinkets will be given away. For questions, contact the Dean's Office at 4-6669 or sphmayo@umn.edu. PubH 6570 Management for Clinical Research will be offered in the fall semester. The two-credit class taught by Gordon Mosser meets from 1:25 to 3:05 p.m. on Mondays. The course is designed for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other clinicians who intend to do clinical research or are already actively doing clinical research at the U of M. The 2008 GLBTA Student Leadership Retreat will be held Sept. 19-21 at Itasca State Park. The retreat will focus on leadership development, small group facilitation skills, and exploring intersecting identities and oppressions through a social justice lens. It's also a great way to make new friends and meet new people. This retreat is free and open to all University students interested in creating change for GLBTA Communities on their campuses in Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester, and the Twin Cities.

First year students are invited to participate in the SPH Mentor Program. Your commitment to a mentor relationship will require about 1-2 hours/month of your time from October to May. The benefits can be numerous, including:

"Evaluating the Treatment Effect with Actigraphy Data: A Comparison of Two Methods of Data Analysis," is the topic of Katie Schomaker¿s Plan B Presentation. Benhuai Xie, a Ph.D. candidate in biostatistics, will discuss, “Variable Selection in Penalized Model-Based Clustering” at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
