The NIH has five new Program Announcements in the NIH Funding Opportunities and Notices for August 24, 2007 (View it online) concerning grants for educational loan repayment. If you have all of the first three qualifications, as well as four or five other qualifications,, then you may qualify to apply. The faculty chair or educational coordinator in your program will be able to help you with this application. Please contact Judy Garrard at jgarrard@umn.edu if you have the first three qualifications listed below:
- Applicants must be citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States;
- Applicants must be qualified health and/or allied health professionals including, but not limited to, physicians, Ph.D.-level scientists, nurses and physician assistants, as well as graduate students and postgraduate research fellows training in the health professions (some announcements require a Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.P.M., Pharm.D., Psy.D., D.C., N.D., or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution).
- Applicants must have total qualifying educational loan debt equal to or in excess of 20 percent of their institutional base salary on the date of program eligibility (the effective date that a loan repayment contract has been executed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services or designee), expected to be between July and September 2008. Institutional base salary is the annual amount that the organization pays for the participant's appointment, whether the time is spent in research, teaching, patient care or other activities. Institutional base salary excludes any income that a participant may earn outside the duties of the organization. Institutional base salary may not include or comprise any income (salary or wages) earned as a Federal employee.
Yasin Garad, MCH student, presented “Comparing Beliefs about AIDS across U.S.-Born Versus Somali-Born Individuals” at the Somali Studies International Association Tenth Triennial Congress in Columbus, Ohio, Aug 15-18.
Public Health Ethics courses expand online offerings for Fall 2007. Space has been limited in the SPH’s public health ethics online course offerings in past semesters. During Fall 2007 additional online sections will be available, making the course accessible for students wanting to complete it over the Internet. New course--Refugee Health: Trauma, Stress & Coping. This course will address war, displacement, and associated stressors affecting psychosocial health of refugees. Focus on pre and post migration experiences, family and community dynamics, and approaches to support and recovery. The purpose of this course is to develop the insight and skills to create innovative community-based approaches to support refugee psychosocial health. Dates: 9/22/07, 10/17/07 & 12/11/0. PubH 6085--Prevention and Control of Tobacco and Alcohol Problems--will be offered in fall 2007 on Wednesdays, from 9:05 a.m.-12:05 p.m., in Mayo Building, room 1250. The course specifically focuses on policy, community, and individual level strategies to reduce the burden of tobacco and alcohol problems locally, nationally, and globally. Similarities and differences in public health approaches to tobacco and alcohol prevention and control will also be discussed along with similarities and differences in alcohol and tobacco industry practices. The course includes a variety of formats: lectures, group discussion, debates, student presentations, and field trips. A new section (oo2) has been added for PH6281/PA5451 "Immigrant Health Issues." This is an online, distance-ed course, Dr. Robin Councilman, that can be taken from a home or office computer for either 3 or 4 graduate credits.
