Welcome Students!

Attend the AHC Multicultural Society’s annual welcome social Sept. 3, 4 to 6 p.m., in the CHIP Lounge, 1-425 Moos Tower. Ethnic food and beverages will be provided. The mission of the AHC Multicultural Society is to bring together students, professionals, and faculty within the AHC who value the importance of multiculturalism and diversity at the University of Minnesota. The School of Public Health Student Senate is sponsoring a back-to-school-BBQ on Friday Sept. 5. The BBQ will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Riverbend Plaza - the lawn area behind Coffman Union. Students are invited to mingle with your fellow students and enjoy a brat or a burger. Vegetarian options also will be provided. There will be a raffle, a band and tons of food. Questions? Send an e-mail the SPH Student Senate 2008-2009 at sphss@umn.edu.

An informational meeting will be held Sept. 25 about the Master of Public Health and Master of Social Work dual degree program. The joint meeting with Community Health Education and Maternal and Child Health will be held from 1:45 to 3 p.m. in room 5 of Peters Hall on the St. Paul Campus. The 2008 GLBTA Student Leadership Retreat will be held Sept. 19-21 at Itasca State Park. The retreat will focus on leadership development, small group facilitation skills, and exploring intersecting identities and oppressions through a social justice lens. It’s also a great way to make new friends and meet new people. This retreat is free and open to all University students interested in creating change for GLBTA Communities on their campuses in Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester, and the Twin Cities.

Dean John Finnegan has named Ira Moscovice as the new head of the Division of Health Policy and Management, effective immediately. Moscovice was also named the school's newest Mayo Professor of Public Health. "I am confident in his commitment to shaping the future of the Division and the School, and I am deeply grateful for his willingness to provide leadership in this new role," Finnegan said. Moscovice will also serve as a member of the SPH Executive Team composed of division heads, associate and assistant deans.Public Health Scene

Wei He, a master's candidate in Biostatistics will discuss ¿Longitudinal Analysis of the Association between Childhood and Adolescence Violence Victimization and Menstrual Cycle Length During the Late Premenopausal Years,¿ on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Sept. 26, 7 to 9 a.m.
The Connection Between Food and Health will be the topic of this ¿Public Health Matters¿ breakfast forum. Minnesota Department of Health Commissioner Sanne Magnan and Minnesota Department of Agriculture Eugene Hugoson will discuss critical issues about food and its impact on the public¿s health. The event will be held at the Neighborhood House in St. Paul.
