Shengde Liang’s Ph.D. presentation, “Bayesian Hierarchical Modeling of Geostatistical and Spatial Point Process Data,” will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, Coordinating Centers for Biometric Research Ballroom, 2221 University Ave. S.E., Suite 200. “Odd risks or risky odds? Logistic regression and other models for dichotomous outcomes,” will be the topic of Ken Kleinman’s discussion on Friday, Sept. 19. The Epidemiology and Community Health division seminar will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 364 of the West Bank Office Building. Kleinman is an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in Boston. For more information, contact Carol Raichert at 5-1836.

Student News

Genelle Lamont, an environmental health sciences doctoral student, attended the "National Native American Research Conference on Health" sponsored by the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB). Lamont, who has worked on the American Indian Community Tobacco Project with SPH staff member Kris Rhodes and professor Jean Forster for about a year, presented on a paper accepted in the December issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The GAPSA President's Reception for new and returning graduate and professional students will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, 5:30-8 p.m. Every fall semester, the Graduate and Professional Students Assembly (GAPSA) hosts this reception at the Loring Pasta Bar in Dinkytown. Student volunteers are needed to serve on the SPH film festival committee. Members of the committee will meet monthly beginning in the fall to organize the SPH’s annual National Public Health Week Film Festival which will be held the first week in April 2009. The Phillips Neighborhood Clinic (PNC) is a student-run clinic that provides free health care to the under-served and unstably housed members of the Phillips Neighborhood in South Minneapolis. Students interested in volunteering should consider attending one of two informational meetings to learn more. The first is scheduled from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, in Moos 2-520. Session No. 2 is scheduled from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Moos 2-520. Volunteer applications, due Sept. 19, are available in the CHIP Lounge, SPHERE, and MSW Student Lounge. Health.

The Community Involvement Fair will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Great Hall at Coffman Union. Talk to representatives from more than 80 organizations to find a position that matches your interests. Workshops will be offered and a $100 gift certificate to U of M Bookstores will be given away.

School News

Looking for a great international experience? Join fellow Academic Health Center students and faculty members in learning about the fight against HIV/AIDS epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa in an informational session, “Saving Lives and Stomping Out Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa.” Dr. Tim Meade, an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Medical School, will discuss his clinical work with HIV-positive orphans, vulnerable children, and pregnant women in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa. The session will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, in Mayo 3-100. Refreshments will be served.

Show support for the SPH recipients of the Walter H. Judd International Graduate and Professional Fellowships by attending the annual poster session and reception for recipients. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8. at McNamara Alumni Center. The event is open to the public. Advisers, faculty, and former Judd Fellows are especially encouraged to attend. Deadline for the next round of fellowship applications is Feb. 9, 2009. This year’s recipients included more Judd fellows from the SPH than any other university unit.

Beginning in fall 2008 the SPH will collect student course evaluations electronically using a software system called CoursEval. The system will send e-mail notifications to students to let them know when they can access and complete the course evaluations. Students who complete the course evaluations promptly will be able to access their final grades as soon as the faculty member issues a grade. All students will have access to their final grades two weeks after the last day of the semester regardless of whether they completed the course evaluation.

The Academic Health Center is sponsoring a blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the McNamara Alumni Center. Donors should schedule an appointment online.
