The Academic Health Center is sponsoring a blood drive on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the McNamara Alumni Center. Donors should schedule an appointment online. The SPH Public Health and Culture monthly series, “Celebrating Hispanic Month,” will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24. Attendees will hear presentations from SPH students Mercedes Estrada Recinos and Noel Mueller. The event goes from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will be held in 3-125 Mayo. Biomedical Librarian Lisa McGuire wants to help students become “Information Fluent” when it comes to using the library resources. That’s why she is offering several options that students could find helpful. See the links below for more information. Students can watch/listen to the first presentation on their own time. The U of M Bookstore is placing specialized “School of Public Health” diploma frame orders in October to prepare for fall and spring semester graduation. Though no payment is required now, the SPH Senate would like students to contact them if they are interested in getting frames so they can alert the bookstore. All diploma frames are in the mahogany gold design and can be seen on the University of Minnesota Bookstore website. Look for a brochure of the diploma frame designs on the Student Senate bulletin board in the SPHere. Students interested diploma frames should contact the Student Senate at sphss@umn.edu before October.

Student volunteers are needed to serve on the SPH film festival committee. Members of the committee will meet monthly beginning in the fall to organize the SPH’s annual National Public Health Week Film Festival which will be held the first week in April 2009. Show support for the SPH recipients of the Walter H. Judd International Graduate and Professional Fellowships by attending the annual poster session and reception for recipients. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8. at McNamara Alumni Center. The event is open to the public. Advisers, faculty, and former Judd Fellows are especially encouraged to attend. Deadline for the next round of fellowship applications is Feb. 9, 2009. This year’s recipients included more Judd fellows from the SPH than any other university unit.

Beginning in fall 2008 the SPH will collect student course evaluations electronically using a software system called CoursEval. The system will send e-mail notifications to students to let them know when they can access and complete the course evaluations. Students who complete the course evaluations promptly will be able to access their final grades as soon as the faculty member issues a grade. All students will have access to their final grades two weeks after the last day of the semester regardless of whether they completed the course evaluation.
Public Health Scene is an SPH blog that keeps up with news related to SPH and its faculty. The blog is updated several times each week.

“Random Effects Models in a Meta-Analysis of the Accuracy of Two Diagnostic Tests without a Gold Standard,” is the topic of Haitao Chu’s seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Chu is from the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina. The seminar will be held at 3:30 p.m. in 5-125 MoosT. A social tea will be held at 3 p.m. in A434 Mayo. “Challenges and Opportunities in the Evolution from Episodic Healthcare to Community Health Improvement,” is the topic of Richard Norling’s talk during the 2008 James A. Hamilton Lecture Series. The lecture, sponsored by the Program in Healthcare Administration and its Alumni Association/Foundation, will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, in Mayo Auditorium. A reception will follow.
