The SPH division of Health Policy and Management is sponsoring a two-week dialogue on health care reform issues on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Wednesday, Oct. 7, noon-1:30 p.m., D325/D327 Mayo. Faculty participants are Jean Abraham, Lynn Blewett, Bryan Dowd, Roger Feldman, Ira Moscovice, and Robert Town. SPH faculty, staff, and students are welcome.

Student Senate will hold its next meeting, with the newly appointed representatives, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 5 p.m. in the SPHere. Refreshments will be served, and all SPH students are welcome to attend.

Student News

Become a Leader within the APHA Student Assembly. Are you looking for an opportunity to meet and network with other passionate public health students, use and enhance your leadership skills, and contribute to the American Public Health Association Student Assembly? To apply, you must be a student, a current member of APHA and the Student Assembly, and willing to commit approximately 10 to 20 hours per month to the position for one year. For more information about the 12 open positions, email Kristina Pearson at pearson@umn.edu

The American Public Health Association Student Assembly is launching a new scholarship/grant program: Advocacy on Campuses That Impacts Our Nation (ACTION). This program aims to motivate public health students to create and implement plans for raising public health advocacy on their campuses and in their communities. The top submission nationally will be granted $500 and implemented during the spring of 2010, preferably during National Public Health Week, April 7-13. The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 23. Travel scholarships are available for students attending the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting and APHA-Student Assembly Annual Student Meeting, Nov. 7-11 in Philadelphia. Submit hard copy applications to the Student Senate office in the SPHere by 5 p.m., Oct. 1. Questions regarding the scholarship application may be directed to the SPH Student Senate at sphss@umn.edu, subject line ‘APHA Travel Scholarship.’

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a two year postgraduate competency-based training program in public health informatics. Applications for the fellowship period beginning July 2010 are due Nov. 4 with supporting documentation due Nov. 12.

The Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety presents “Update on National Health Care Reform: A Moving Target.” Lynn Blewett, associate professor and principal investigator State Health Access Data Assistance Center, will present on Monday, Sept. 28, 2:30-4 p.m., 3-125 Mayo.

Perry Logan, an SPH alumnus working at 3M, will discuss the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation: What is it? How do you get it? And what will it do for you professionally? The presentation will occur on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 4:30-6 p.m., 1260 Mayo.
