New changes to the copier in the SPHere lounge will allow students to copy rather than print all of the information they want to read. This feature is easy to use and allows user to scan a document and send it electronically to their e-mail account. Attached are the two versions of instructions.

The first training session for the SPH Student Ambassador Program will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Ambassadors are student volunteers who will travel to local, regional, or national recruitment events and conferences, and will provide tours for people visiting the SPH. If interested in participating in the program, bring a current resume to the first training session held in the Dean’s Office Mayo A301. Dinner will be provided. Learn more about the Peace Corps by attending an information session. Alicen Spaulding, a public health student and former Health Extension Volunteer, will share her experiences living and working in Paraguay from 12:20 to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9 in C391 Mayo. “Views from the U: The Political Science of Election '08” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20. Hosted by the University's political science department, the forum featuring six of faculty experts on campaigns and elections. These experts will address key issues in modern politics, including: campaign strategy; political advertisements; campaign finance; race and gender; the national economy; foreign policy; electoral rules and procedures; and the elements of politics that distinguish Minnesota's place in the nation. The Center on Aging announces new Certificate in Aging Studies Program. The University's Center on Aging has launched a new graduate level program that offers community practitioners from a variety of disciplines an opportunity to develop their skills in gerontology.

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is offering two new community public health programs at the CIEE study centers in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Gaborone, Botswana. The seven-week summer study abroad programs are offering college credit. Application deadlines are April 1, 2009.

Biomedical Librarian Lisa McGuire wants to help students become “Information Fluent” when it comes to using the library resources. That’s why she is offering several options that students could find helpful. See the links below for more information. Students can watch/listen to the first presentation on their own time. The U of M Bookstore is placing specialized “School of Public Health” diploma frame orders in October to prepare for fall and spring semester graduation. Though no payment is required now, the SPH Senate would like students to contact them if they are interested in getting frames so they can alert the bookstore. All diploma frames are in the mahogany gold design and can be seen on the University of Minnesota Bookstore website. Look for a brochure of the diploma frame designs on the Student Senate bulletin board in the SPHere. Students interested diploma frames should contact the Student Senate at sphss@umn.edu before October.

Show support for the SPH recipients of the Walter H. Judd International Graduate and Professional Fellowships by attending the annual poster session and reception for recipients. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8. at McNamara Alumni Center. The event is open to the public. Advisers, faculty, and former Judd Fellows are especially encouraged to attend. Deadline for the next round of fellowship applications is Feb. 9, 2009. This year’s recipients included more Judd fellows from the SPH than any other university unit.

Qingqing Yang, a master’s candidate in biostatistics, will discuss, “Multiple Latent Class Analysis,” on Thursday, Oct. 2. Yang’s Plan B Presentation will be held at 11:15 a.m. in A301 Mayo. “Introduction to the Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research (with an emphasis on Screening for Colorectal Cancer),” is the topic of the Epidemiology Division seminar scheduled for Friday, Oct. 3. The seminar will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 364 of WBOB. Hanna Bloomfield and Melissa Partin, professors of medicine for the VA Medical Center are the speakers for the seminar. “An Update to the Rate Tables for the Survival Package in S-Plus/R,” is the topic of Christopher Anderson’s Plan B Presentation. Anderson is a master’s candidate in biostatistics.
