SPHere Spotlight

Student volunteers are needed to staff the SPH booth during the American Public Health Association Conference in San Diego. The conference will be held Oct. 25-29. Volunteers will work in two-hour increments that are aligned with poster and scientific session times. To volunteer or to see the schedule, please contact Melvin Monette in the Student Services Center (D305 Mayo) or e-mail to monet0082umn.edu.

Party Planners Wanted. The SPH All-School Winter Reception scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11, needs to be exciting, fun, and memorable; therefore, your help is needed. We are seeking volunteers to assist in the planning of this event. We ask that you attend three, one-hour meetings (dates and times to be determined) to discuss, plan, and execute tasks. Because the events team appreciates your creativity and service, they will reward volunteers with a special treat. To volunteer for the SPH All-School Winter Reception planning committee, please contact Nichole Marthaler by phone 6-9303 or e-mail mart1047@umn.edu by Friday, Oct. 24.

Student News

Applications are now being accepted for mentors and mentees for the GLBTA Mentor Program. University students will be paired with mentors who are University faculty, alumni, and community members. The mentor pairs will meet a minimum of twice a month and attend monthly mentor and mentee meetings. This program is designed to provide the mentor pairs with the freedom and flexibility to form their own relationship.
Application/more about this mentor program Deadline is Friday, Oct. 10. Applications can be faxed to 612-624-9028 or sent by e-mail to Qmentor@umn.edu. Those submitting applications will be contacted within a few days to schedule informational interviews.

The Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GAPSA) is now offering a travel grant designated for professional students (M.P.H. students and not M.S. or Ph.D. students).

International Student and Scholar Services is offering career workshops for international students on campus. These sessions provide practical information and materials on how to find a job, how to write a resume and cover letter, how to prepare for a job interview, and visa options after graduation. Some semesters, additional topics are offered such as the academic job search, finding an internship, and the home country job search.

Emergency Response courses are being offered through the SPH and the Midwest Consortium for Hazardous Waste Worker Training. These courses are designed for sanitarians, first responders, environmental health students, food safety managers, public safety personnel, and hazmat workers at all levels. No prior coursework is required. Students receive certification as “operations” or “technician level” hazardous materials responders (required through OSHA 1910.120). Questions? Call 6-4515.

New changes to the copier in the SPHere lounge will allow students to copy rather than print all of the information they want to read. This feature is easy to use and allows user to scan a document and send it electronically to their e-mail account. Attached are the two versions of instructions.

Learn more about the Peace Corps by attending an information session. Alicen Spaulding, a public health student and former Health Extension Volunteer, will share her experiences living and working in Paraguay from 12:20 to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9 in C391 Mayo. “Views from the U: The Political Science of Election '08” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20. Hosted by the University's political science department, the forum featuring six of faculty experts on campaigns and elections. These experts will address key issues in modern politics, including: campaign strategy; political advertisements; campaign finance; race and gender; the national economy; foreign policy; electoral rules and procedures; and the elements of politics that distinguish Minnesota's place in the nation. The Center on Aging announces new Certificate in Aging Studies Program. The University's Center on Aging has launched a new graduate level program that offers community practitioners from a variety of disciplines an opportunity to develop their skills in gerontology.

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is offering two new community public health programs at the CIEE study centers in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Gaborone, Botswana. The seven-week summer study abroad programs are offering college credit. Application deadlines are April 1, 2009.

School News

Show support for the SPH recipients of the Walter H. Judd International Graduate and Professional Fellowships by attending the annual poster session and reception for recipients. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8. at McNamara Alumni Center. The event is open to the public. Advisers, faculty, and former Judd Fellows are especially encouraged to attend. Deadline for the next round of fellowship applications is Feb. 9, 2009. This year’s recipients included more Judd fellows from the SPH than any other university unit.

Leigh Smythe, transgender activist, will talk about public health and transgender issues from her personal perspective and community involvement. Ruzong Fan will discuss, “Extended Homozygosity Score Tests to Detect Positive Selection in Genome-wide Scans” during a seminar on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Fan is from the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University. The seminar will be held at 3:30 p.m. in 5-125 MoosT. A social tea will be held at 3 p.m. in A434 Mayo. All are welcome to attend.

“Comparison of Imputation Methods for Survey Data,” is the topic of Jianmin Liu’s Plan B Presentation. The presentation will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, in Mayo A301.
