The SPH Student Senate will hold its next general meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. in the SPHere. All SPH students are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served. The division representatives and committee chairs, as well as the roster of voting members, will be made available on the SPHSS website.
Join the SPH marching in the University of Minnesota Homecoming Parade this Friday. March alongside fellow students, faculty, staff, and alumni this Friday, Oct. 9 in the evening. Joining the public health parade unit will be Dean Finnegan driving a donated ZENN car along University Avenue. Participants will receive a complimentary long-sleeved SPH Homecoming shirt.

Party Planners needed for the SPH All-School Winter Reception, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 10. Volunteers will attend three, one-hour meetings (dates and times to be determined) to discuss, plan, and execute tasks. (Volunteers will be rewarded for their time.) The Medical Industry Leadership Institute student association (MILIsa) board is seeking representatives from participating schools to serve as liaisons and provide perspective from their respective programs. Representatives will be expected to help plan and promote MILIsa activities, as well as dedicate a minimum of two hours per month to MILIsa during the 2009-10 academic year. SPH apparel is on sale until noon on Oct. 23. Order forms should be returned with payment to the Student Senate Office through the mail slot in the SPHere (Mayo A150). Checks should be made payable to “University of Minnesota.” Orders can be shipped. The proceeds from the apparel sale go to support PAMOJA, the Student Senate-sponsored social event for SPH, which takes place in the spring. A government and law enforcement careers panel will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 12:30-2 p.m., Hubert Humphrey Center, Room 215. This event is good preparation for the Oct. 26 government job and internship fair.

Francophone Public Health Journal Club. A small group of students have started a public health journal club for speakers of French. Anyone who speaks French, whatever the level, is invited to join. If you are interested, contact Ben at stei0496@umn.edu.

The Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) has announced openings for four new APTR fellows. Travel scholarships are available for students attending the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting and APHA-Student Assembly Annual Student Meeting, Nov. 7-11 in Philadelphia. Submit hard copy applications to the Student Senate office in the SPHere by 5 p.m., Oct. 1. The American Public Health Association Student Assembly is launching a new scholarship/grant program: Advocacy on Campuses That Impacts Our Nation (ACTION). This program aims to motivate public health students to create and implement plans for raising public health advocacy on their campuses and in their communities. The top submission nationally will be granted $500 and implemented during the spring of 2010, preferably during National Public Health Week, April 7-13. The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 23. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a two year postgraduate competency-based training program in public health informatics. Applications for the fellowship period beginning July 2010 are due Nov. 4 with supporting documentation due Nov. 12.
