SPHere Spotlight

SPH Student Senate has grants available for students who wish to participate in professional development, event planning, faculty and student mentoring, or networking. Fill out a short grant form with the description of your proposal, what the funds would be used for, and submit to sphss@umn.edu or the SPHSS mailbox in the SPHere. Grants are available year round and funds are typically released three times annually.

The next SPH Student Senate Meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 28, 5-6 p.m. in the SPHere. Learn about upcoming events, including Trick-or-Fooding. All SPH Students are welcome to attend and refreshments will be served. Contact sphss@umn.edu with questions.


Student News

MPIRG is hosting an event on Oct. 29 to explain how health insurance pertains to current students, and what students can expect regarding health insurance after graduation. Contact Laura at perdu011@umn.edu or Sam at leex4900@umn.edu for more information on how to volunteer or attend the forum.

The SPHSS volunteer committee needs your help on Saturday, Oct. 31 to pick up non-perishable food items to be delivered to a local food shelf. Drivers, cars, and walkers are needed. Contact Laura at perdu011@umn.edu or Sam at leex4900@umn.edu for more information.

The Georgetown Public Policy Review is currently seeking submissions of academic articles for the 2010 edition based on the theme “Global Health: Disease Control, Development, and Public Health Policy.” Submissions are due Nov. 10. For complete submission requirements or questions, contact executive print editors, Rory O’Sullivan or R. Brent Wisner at gppireview@georgetown.edu.

Become a Physical, Healthy, Driven (PHD) volunteer with the YMCA. Help elementary, middle, and high school students prepare for a healthy lifestyle. Work with students to teach them about nutrition, exercise, and making healthy choices. Contact the YMCA PHD program at PHD@YMCAmpls.org for more information or to apply.

School News

SPH apparel sales have been extended. The new deadline to submit orders and payment to the SPHere is Noon on Friday, Oct. 30. Order forms are in the SPHere and the Student Services office. Apparel samples are available in SPH Student Services (Mayo D305). Consider purchasing items to help support Pamoja, the Student Senate’s annual social event, held during the spring semester.

Join the Northland Chapter of the Society of Toxicology (NLSOT) for its fall meeting, which is titled Minnesota, Mesothelioma, and Fibers: Updates and Perspectives. The meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29, at the EPA laboratory in Duluth and will feature SPH professors. Contact Catherine Jacobson at cfjacobson@mmm.com with questions.

Homecoming 2009: Thank you SPH volunteers. During the U’s “Ultimate Homecoming” Oct. 4-10, the SPH participated in an open house and parade. The open house attracted thousands of spectators and many stopped by the SPH booth to see demonstrations led by SPH staff member Diane Toscano, faculty member Nancy Nachreiner, and student Ania Urban. The following Friday, SPH had a walking unit in the parade.
