SPHere Spotlight

SPH Career Services presents the second annual Field Experience Fair on Nov. 12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Mayo Auditorium lobby. The fair will showcase student field experiences in local and international locations. The event is an opportunity to network with preceptors, major coordinators, and students. There will be resources for open positions, fellowships, and funding options. Lunch will be provided.

SPH Student Senate has grants available for students who wish to participate in professional development, event planning, faculty and student mentoring, or networking. Fill out a short grant form with the description of your proposal, what the funds would be used for, and submit to sphss@umn.edu or the SPHSS mailbox in the SPHere. Grants are available year round and funds are typically released three times annually.

Join SPH colleagues at the school’s alumni and friends reception at APHA. The reception will be held in conjunction with the American Public Health Association’s annual meeting in Philadelphia, on Monday, Nov. 9. The event will be held at the Field House, located inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center, location of the APHA annual meeting, from 6:30-8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is not required. If you have questions, contact Nichole Axtman at mart1047@umn.edu.


Student News

The U.S. Government Accountability Office will present on the agency and analyst and intern positions on Monday, Nov. 2, in HHH Room 205. The first is at 12:45, and the second at 6:00. No sign-up necessary. Snacks will be provided.

Representatives from the Council of State and territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) will present information about available fellowship positions from Centers for Disease Control and CSTE on Nov. 18, 9-10 a.m., location to be determined. Second and final year students are encouraged to come. Breakfast will be provided.

Join the Food Industry Center for its Fall Student Networking Conference on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1-5 p.m., in Coffman Memorial Union. This conference brings together University students and food industry professionals to meet each other and learn more about topics currently engaging the food industry.

HFHL will host a luncheon to explain its initiatives and provide an opportunity to meet with other students on campus working and researching food and public health issues. The Georgetown Public Policy Review is currently seeking submissions of academic articles for the 2010 edition based on the theme “Global Health: Disease Control, Development, and Public Health Policy.” Submissions are due Nov. 10. Become a Physical, Healthy, Driven (PHD) volunteer with the YMCA. Help elementary, middle, and high school students prepare for a healthy lifestyle. School News

The Annual School Visit with Sr. Vice President for Health Sciences, Frank B. Cerra will occur on Monday, Nov. 23, 12-2 p.m., in the Mayo Auditorium. Faculty, staff, and students are invited.

SPH experts soon will be on the frontlines working to help developing countries better respond to emerging infectious diseases that pose a threat to human and animal health. The SPH and several other U of M schools are part of a team project called RESPOND that will implement a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) cooperative agreement with funding up to $185 million. SPH associate dean for education Debra Olson (pictured) will serve as associate director for the project and SPH professor Bill Toscano as a regional lead. SPH faculty members Claudia Munoz-Zanzi and Randy Singer will also contribute to the work.

The University of Minnesota has launched a new Master of Development Practice (MDP) degree to train professionals in international development. The interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary degree program spans seven academic units, including the SPH, and will be offered as a partnership between the Humphrey Institute and the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change. The U of M is one of only four universities in the United States to have such a program. Some of the program's required courses will be taught in the SPH by SPH faculty. This programs is viewed as an attractive dual degree opportunity for SPH students.

Sue Borowick is the new director for the Centers for Public Health Education and Outreach (CPHEO). Borowick brings over 24 years of training and management experience in both the private and public sectors. She has expertise in training needs assessment, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Her experiences with e-learning tools, methods and strategies, facilitation, project management, product development and implementation, and negotiations will enable her to contribute to CPHEO’s initiatives.

Request for Proposals: Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives Institute has released a request for interdisciplinary research projects related to food and health. The institute will award up to one research grant of $50,000 to $100,000 in each of the following areas: food policy, prevention of obesity and chronic disease, and food safety. Criteria for funding are interdisciplinarity, innovation, potential impact, utilization of new collaborations, quality of the research proposal, and potential for future external funding. Deadline is Nov. 23. For more information, see request for proposals or email healthy foods.

The Summit of Sages: Inspiration, Innovation, and Transformation will be held Nov. 4-6 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This summit focuses on transformative health care delivery, and six Sages or nurses who are at the forefront of a new way of providing health care.

Health Care Reform 101 will occur on Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m., in the Mayo Auditorium with speakers, Susan Foote, SPH professor emerita; Carol Backstrom, assistant to the commissioner on health reform, Minnesota Department of Health; and Dr. Kent Bottles, president of Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement.
