M.P.H. students interested in adding an Interdisciplinary Concentration Area are invited to attend an information session at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Mayo A301 Mayo. The four interdisciplinary concentration areas for MPH students are Complementary and Alternative Medicine; Global Health; Health Disparities; and Public Health Policy. Join student services for concentration presentations, discussions, and treats.

Deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 25, to order Public Health Apparel from the Student Senate for the holidays. Due to popular demand, the apparel order deadline has been moved up to Tuesday Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. Although the deadline is changing, the apparel will still be in before the holidays! The annual apparel sale is a way for students to raise money for the SPH social event, PAMOJA, which occurs in February. Samples are available in the Student Services Office in D305 Mayo. Please return order form and payment to Student Services Center. Cash and checks can be placed in an envelope with the words, "Senate Apparel." If mailing to Student Services Center, send only checks. Please make checks out to “University of Minnesota,” with "Apparel" in the memo. Orders are expected to be in before holiday break, so order for family and friends. Pick-up day and time will be announced.

Student News

The SPH is recruiting 10 student volunteers for an exciting new partnership program that pairs SPH and School of Journalism and Mass Communication students with high school students. U of M students will serve as mentors to Arlington High School students. Mentor teams will craft and conceptualize their public health message for the “It’s Global” PSA contest for National Public Health Week April 6-11, 2009. The time commitment varies, but it will not be more than two to three hours per week. The program runs from December to March. If you are interested in becoming a SPH student mentor or would like more information please contact Emily Matson at mats0166@umn.edu by Friday Nov. 28.

The Graduate and Professional Student Assembly is offering travel grants designated for professional students in MPH programs.

The Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowship for Women Scientists in Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is now accepting applications for the 2009 award cycle. This postdoctoral fellowship is open to women in basic, clinical, epidemiological, or prevention science who are seeking to train in any of the NCI’s intramural research settings. Applicants must be female, must have completed their doctoral degree by the time they begin the fellowship, must be U.S. citizens or have U.S. permanent residency, and must have no more than five years postdoctoral research experience.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is accepting applications for its Science and Technology fellowships. The application deadline is Monday, Dec. 15. The 35-year-old fellowship program has provided doctoral-level scientists and engineers with a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to national and international issues in the federal policy realm, while learning first-hand about establishing and implementing policy. Fellows select assignments in Congressional offices or federal agencies. The year-long opportunity begins Sept. 1 and ends Aug. 31. Stipends are up to $92,000 per year, depending on years of experience and previous salary.
Requirements and application

The Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program is offering a one-year clinical research training experience for graduate students in health professions. Fellows will be working in NIH-funded centers in Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Haiti, India, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia. The deadline to apply is Friday, Dec. 5. Each fellowship will be for a one year period that begins with an orientation in July 2009.

Attend the All-School Winter Reception and be treated like the star that you are! Dean John Finnegan invites faculty, staff, and students to walk down the red carpet and join him at the 2008 All-School Winter Reception from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Weisman Art Museum. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar will host a national summit on health care reform entitled “Prescription for Reform,” on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Featured speakers include Senator Klobuchar; Karen Davis, president, Commonwealth Fund; Denis Cortese, president and CEO, Mayo Clinic; Jack Wennberg, director of the Center for Evaluative and Clinical Sciences, Dartmouth Medical School; and former U.S. senator David Durenberger, founder and chair of the National Institute for Health Policy. The free summit will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Mayo Auditorium. All are welcome to attend.

“Assessing, Managing and Communicating Environmental Risk: A Call to Action” will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3.  The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Cowles Auditorium. Three panel discussions will describe Minnesota's current institutions and processes for assessing and communicating environmental risk; explore various innovative approaches and perspectives on risk assessment and management; and, evaluate the challenges faced by public officials and the media in accurately communicating about environmental risks.

“The Impact of Public Reporting on Post-Acute Care” is the topic of Rachel Werner’s presentation on Thursday, Dec. 4. Werner is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The SPH Division of Health Policy and Management seminar will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 2-530 Moos Tower.

The SPH Roundtable Series: Public Health 2050, "The Changing Face of Minnesota Communities Now through 2050: How Will Public Health Respond?" will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Dec. 4. Minnesota state demographer Tom Gillaspy is the keynote speaker for the event, which will be held in Coffman Memorial Union Theater. There will also be a panel discussion that includes Jocelyn Ancheta, Mitchell Davis, Katherine Fennelly, SPH Dean John Finnegan, Sean Kershaw, Yusef Mgeni, and SPH Associate Dean Debra Olson. The moderator is Edward Ehlinger, director and chief health officer of Boynton Health Service. The roundtable is free, but registration is requested.

Johannes (Hans) Brug is the keynote speaker for the Epidemiology and Community Health Division Seminar on Friday, Dec. 5. Brug is the director of the EXGO Institute for Trans and Extramural Health and Medical Research. He is also a professor of epidemiology at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The seminar will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in room 364 of the West Bank Office Building. For more information contact Carol Raichert at 5-1836.
