“Assessing, Managing and Communicating Environmental Risk: A Call to Action” will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Cowles Auditorium. Three panel discussions will describe Minnesota's current institutions and processes for assessing and communicating environmental risk; explore various innovative approaches and perspectives on risk assessment and management; and, evaluate the challenges faced by public officials and the media in accurately communicating about environmental risks.

The SPH Roundtable Series: Public Health 2050, "The Changing Face of Minnesota Communities Now through 2050: How Will Public Health Respond?" will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Dec. 4. Minnesota state demographer Tom Gillaspy is the keynote speaker for the event, which will be held in Coffman Memorial Union Theater. There will also be a panel discussion that includes Jocelyn Ancheta, Mitchell Davis, Katherine Fennelly, SPH Dean John Finnegan, Sean Kershaw, Yusef Mgeni, and SPH Associate Dean Debra Olson. The moderator is Edward Ehlinger, director and chief health officer of Boynton Health Service. The roundtable is free, but registration is requested.

The U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps is seeking environmental health student applicants for its internship program, the Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program. M.P.H. and M.S.P.H. students who have completed the first year of their program by May 2009 are eligible to apply. Students are encouraged to submit their application by Wednesday, Dec. 31. Applications will be reviewed starting in January for summer 2009 positions. The Sallie Rosen Kaplan Fellowship for Women Scientists in Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is now accepting applications for the 2009 award cycle. This postdoctoral fellowship is open to women in basic, clinical, epidemiological, or prevention science who are seeking to train in any of the NCI’s intramural research settings. Applicants must be female, must have completed their doctoral degree by the time they begin the fellowship, must be U.S. citizens or have U.S. permanent residency, and must have no more than five years postdoctoral research experience.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is accepting applications for its Science and Technology fellowships. The application deadline is Monday, Dec. 15. The 35-year-old fellowship program has provided doctoral-level scientists and engineers with a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to national and international issues in the federal policy realm, while learning first-hand about establishing and implementing policy. Fellows select assignments in Congressional offices or federal agencies. The year-long opportunity begins Sept. 1 and ends Aug. 31. Stipends are up to $92,000 per year, depending on years of experience and previous salary.

The Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program is offering a one-year clinical research training experience for graduate students in health professions. Fellows will be working in NIH-funded centers in Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Haiti, India, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia. The deadline to apply is Friday, Dec. 5. Each fellowship will be for a one year period that begins with an orientation in July 2009.

The Nov. 19 Field Experience Fair was a huge success. Thank you to all the students who presented information about their own experiences, as well as to speakers Beth Calvert from Mill City Farmer’s Market, Laura Ehrlich from Minnesota International Health Volunteers (MIHV), and Jill Farris from Minnesota Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Prevention, and Parenting (MOAPPP). And congratulations to Katarina Grande, winner of the $50 Visa gift card. Katarina explored the field experience website to correctly answer the questionnaire, and her name was drawn from the eligible entries.

“The Impact of Public Reporting on Post-Acute Care” is the topic of Rachel Werner’s presentation on Thursday, Dec. 4. Werner is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The SPH Division of Health Policy and Management seminar will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 2-530 Moos Tower.

Johannes (Hans) Brug is the keynote speaker for the Epidemiology and Community Health Division Seminar on Friday, Dec. 5. Brug is the director of the EXGO Institute for Trans and Extramural Health and Medical Research. He is also a professor of epidemiology at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
