SPH News Septl. 29, 2008

From
the Dean

From the Dean

John FinneganAs dean, I am proud of the vitality shown by our faculty and students. In previous columns, you’ve read about the record growth of our student body. These students bring skills and experience that will transform public health in the very near future. I’ve also highlighted the extraordinary productivity of our faculty and the many ways their work is improving health in our community and beyond. However, today I would like to highlight another group of impressive individuals: donors to the School of Public Health. During the past fiscal year, these donors made gifts and pledges worth more than $1.9 million – the most ever recorded by the school. In addition to dollars, our donor base is swelling, growing by more than 20% last year to another all-time high for the school.

The remarkable philanthropy shown by our alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and local corporations helps to provide the margin of excellence that our school is known for by adding immediately to the resources available to students and faculty. Donors have also been very thoughtful in telling us of their inclusion of the school in their estate plans, leaving a legacy of support that will build the next generation of public health leadership.

As always, our donors have been generous in endowing new student scholarships and are responding to the University's matching programs that double the awards of all new scholarships. The past year saw a particularly strong effort by our Alumni Society Board. Their support of the 2008 Alumni and Friends Fundraising Gala in April added significantly to the SPH Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund and energized our alumni and community partners. As we are now in a period of tremendous economic uncertainty, I thank all of you who have contributed to our efforts by building a strong financial foundation for our future.

—John R. Finnegan, Jr., Ph.D.
