From the Dean

John FinneganWe were privileged last week to host a delegation from the Indian Council of Medical Research (that country’s equivalent of our NIH), including its interim director general, Dr. S. K. Bhattacharya, and three high-ranking deputies. The visit helped to further solidify a relationship that began two years ago when Dr. Frank Cerra signed a formal agreement between the ICMR and our Academic Health Center that seeks to advance joint health research by Indian scientists and U of M partners.

An important development from this recent visit was the decision by the joint steering committee of our two organizations to set as its priority funding areas the broad fields of cancer and diabetes. The next step will be a joint scientific symposium to be held in New Delhi this winter, which will seek to match the U of M’s top researchers in cancer and diabetes with Indian researchers working in those areas. From there, we hope that we can form the right scientific partnerships and develop extramurally funded proposals under the ICMR/U of M agreement.

The important lesson here is that just as public health is global, so increasingly is the research that drives it.

—John R. Finnegan, Jr., Ph.D.
