From the Dean

John FinneganIt’s hard to believe that 14 weeks have passed since I welcomed you all to the 2008-09 academic year in this column. I hope this has been a successful and rewarding fall semester for you all. I’m sure it has been a busy one.

I invite you to toast the end of the semester with me at the All-School Winter Reception on Thursday, Dec. 11. The event will take place from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m. in the gallery overlooking the Mississippi river at the Weisman Art Museum.

This year’s celebration includes music, refreshments, and raffle prizes — plus the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the SPH version of Hollywood Squares. (Being too young to remember this television game show will in no way hinder the fun of watching faculty, students, and staff duke it out for first prize.) You can RSVP to the reception at www.sph.umn.edu/aswr08/.

I look forward to welcoming you back to the second half of our academic year.  Until then, may your holiday break be filled with warmth, relaxation, and joyful times with family and friends.

—John R. Finnegan, Jr., Ph.D.

Faculty News

All instructors, faculty, and others who submit student grades are required to include a “last date of participation” for any student earning a grade of “F” or “N” in a course. This change is being implemented for all academic career levels  in order to comply with a federal requirement that the University cancel 50 percent of a student’s federal Title IV funds if no course participation can be determined for those students who received all F’s, N’s or a combination of them for a term. More information can be found on the Grades FAQ  page on the One Stop Web site.

The SPH Fall Semester Faculty Meeting and Faculty Voting Meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, in 3-100 Mayo.
