Appendix 2.6.c. Health Services Research, Policy and Administration PhD Competency Statement

The objective of the doctoral program is to train students who can successfully compete for positions in health services research and health policy academic units within the nation’s top research universities, and who will be successful in gaining tenure at those institutions. We recognize that many of our doctoral graduates will choose careers in private industry and government as well, and those choices are by no means discouraged. However, we believe that if we pursue the training of top academicians, those students will succeed in other settings, as well.

The curriculum consists of an interdisciplinary examination of the social, political, and economic forces that affect the organization, financing and delivery of health care services. There is a strong emphasis on theory, modeling and quantitative methods.
