School of Public Health Alumni Society Board Member Duties
The Board of Directors’ primary responsibility shall be to assure that the Society’s mission is fulfilled:
"to work collaboratively with the School of Public Health to promote excellence in the School's programs, to be of service to its alumni, and to advance the development of public health in our community and the world."
Duties:
- Hold and participate in at least four meetings per year;
- Develop an annual work plan and budget;
- Hold an annual meeting;
- Commit to three-year terms on the Board (except in the case of the 2007 inaugural board where the length of terms are one, two, or three years).
Committees:
- Executive Committee: president (chair), president-elect, immediate past president, secretary, and treasurer;
- Membership Committee: takes lead in recruiting members and providing value to current members;
- Annual Meeting Coordinating Committee: plans annual meeting;
- Nominating Committee: immediate past president (chair) and two elected Board members, recommend a slate of candidates to the Board to be presented for vote at the annual meeting, facilitating succession of board members to maintain a vibrant organization;
- Constitution and Bylaws: reviews constitution and bylaws annually for relevance and accuracy.
Officers/Executive Committee:
President
- Call and preside at all meetings of the Society, Board of Directors, and the Executive Committee;
- Appoint, with the approval of the Board, any additional standing and ad hoc committees and their chairpersons that the Board deems appropriate and shall be an ex officio member of all committees;
- Perform specific responsibilities as may be established by the Board of Directors;
- Serve a one-year term.
President-Elect
- Assume the duties of the President in the absence or disability of the President;
- Perform specific responsibilities as may be established by the Board of Directors;
- A vacancy occurring in the office of the President-Elect during the year shall be filled in an election by the Board as soon as possible;
- Serve a one-year term.
Immediate Past President
- Serve on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Alumni Association as representative of the School of Public Health;
- Represent the Society at official functions of the School of Public Health;
- Serve a one-year term immediately following a one-year term as President-Elect.
Secretary
- Maintain records of all official action, meetings, and correspondence; be responsible for the preparation and distribution of all communications for the Society as approved by the Board of Directors;
- Serve a one-year term.
Treasurer
- Be responsible for the supervision of all financial matters of the Society and shall prepare a financial statement for the Annual Meeting and at such other times as directed by the Board of Directors;
- Serve a one-year term.
Qualifications:
- Board members must be one of the following: a graduate or a former student who has completed 15 credits, faculty or an employee of the School;
- By time of appointment, Board members must be dues paying members of the Minnesota Alumni Association, which automatically provides membership in the School of Public Health Alumni Society.
Goals of the Society:
- Promote life long learning to facilitate advancement of Alumni careers;
- Bring the realities of the field to assist the School in keeping current with curriculum;
- Advocate for the School within and outside the University;
- Communicate the School’s directions and activities effectively to the Alumni;
- Support students with scholarships, mentoring, employment opportunities and perspectives of the public health professional;
- Energize the Alumni and the students with a sense of loyalty and engagement that is infectious and sustaining;
- Foster the viability of the School and its programs;
- Influence the development and implementation of public health policy;
- Create social and networking opportunities for Alumni;
- Develop, strengthen and leverage strategic partnerships, collaborations and other relationships that further our mission.
