About the Workshop
This highly interactive 2 ½ day workshop is designed for registered dieticians, nurses and other pediatric care providers who want to hone their skills in counseling patients and their families using advanced motivational interviewing (MI) and behavioral counseling techniques. The workshop will concentrate on improving nutrition and physical activity behaviors to prevent and treat child obesity.
Participants will learn about the role parenting styles play in pediatric obesity, which types of physical activity are safe for very obese children, the unique nutrition and physical activity needs of children and adolescents with special health care needs and how to handle professional burnout.
- All participants will have an opportunity to practice counseling skills and receive one-on-one feedback.
- Participants should have basic skills in behavioral counseling and/or motivational interviewing.
- Pre workshop assignments include readings and video viewing and submission of a 10-15 minute audiotape interview.

- Register
- The registration fee for the workshop is $275.
- Registration includes all program sessions, instructional materials, continuing education record and lunch on May 24 and 25.
- Enrollment is limited to 20 participants to allow for adequate one-on-one feedback and intensive training
- 30 hours of CPE has been requested from the American Dietetic Association (10 hours pre-institute work/self study plus 20 hours on-site)
To Enroll for Graduate Credit
This course may be taken for one graduate credit. More information is available on our registration page. Tuition and fees to take the course for graduate credit is $782. These tuition rates are available to University of Minnesota School of Public Health, MPH and non-admitted students. Tuition rates and fees for other programs of study will vary.
