Student Senate Grants

The School of Public Health Student Senate offers grants for students to grow both personally and professionally. These grants are funded by the SPH Student Senate budget and are open to all University of Minnesota School of Public Health students.

Submission deadlines for professional development grants during the 2017-2018 fiscal year (July 1, 2017–June 30, 2018) will be posted shortly.

Professional Development Grants

SPH students can apply for grant funding to assist them with expenses for professional development opportunities. This award may cover academic and professional workshop and conference travel expenses including registration fees, airfare and ground transportation, and lodging expenses.

The SPH Senate funds students to attend approved conferences and workshops for a maximum award of $200.

Professional Student Government (PSG)

All SPH students are eligible to apply for the Professional Student Government (PSG) grants. Visit the PSG website for additional details.

Council of Graduate Students

Only SPH students under the UMN graduate school (MS, PhD) are eligible to apply for the Council of Graduate Students (COGS) grants. Visit the COGS website for additional details.

SPH Student Group Grant Funding

SPH Student Groups are eligible to apply for funding to put towards hosting events that benefit the SPH community.

Mentor Lunch Grant

The SPH Student Senate offers grants to create an opportunity for students and faculty to foster authentic relationships outside of the classroom setting. The SGC reimburses at a rate of $15 per person for approved lunches. Please consider all sources of funding in the event an application is not awarded funding. All applications will be reviewed in light of available funds, and partial funding may be awarded at the discretion of the SGC.

American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Conference Grants

Eligible expenses include APHA registration fees, airfare and ground transportation, and lodging. Applications are due by October 13, 2017 at 11:59pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to present at the conference to be eligible for a grant?

No; however, student presenters are given priority for grant awards. Due to the high number of students that do present, funds will most likely be used to support these individuals.

Can I apply for a grant if I have been awarded a grant in a previous year?

Yes, you may. However, please note that priority is given to applicants that have not received funding in previous years.

How do I apply for conferences that occur in the summer?

You will need to apply before the final general SPHSS meeting on May 2, 2018 to receive an award. You must be a student at the time of the conference and the conference must occur before June 3o, 2018. It is your responsibility to submit reimbursement documents before the fiscal year closes.

Can I apply for a grant event if the event has passed?

APHA Annual Conference grant applications must be submitted before the deadline of October 13, 2017 at 11:59pm. Professional Development grant applications may be submitted after attending the conference/event.
