Unit 1 ETHICS
Michael Resnick
Michael D. Resnick, Ph.D., is a sociologist and Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine and Professor of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. He is Director of Healthy Youth Development Prevention Research Center which conducts research, and provides post-graduate education, training and dissemination of best-practices information on effective approaches to teenage pregnancy prevention.
Resnick is interested in the translation of research into programs, policies and practices that promote the well being of young people. He teaches in the areas of health care policy, teenage pregnancy prevention, and critical reading of scientific literature, and has earned four awards for outstanding teaching and adolescent health research. He is a reviewer for over two dozen public health, social science and medical journals. He works with legislators, professional and advocacy groups, and the media, to promote a positive agenda for adolescent health, and an understanding of how families, schools and communities can strengthen resilience and well-being of young people.
Unit 2 MANAGING IN CHANGE
Mary Jane Madden

Mary Jane Madden, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota and Director of the Program in Patient Care administration. She was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey 2002 - 2003. She teaches courses in organizational behavior and managing in change.
Mary Jane was Principal Investigator on a W. K. Kellogg grant to ISP for the development of a program in Community Health Intersection (CHI). Mary Jane is the author of a book on models for patient care delivery and publications on communication work redesign, leadership and learning organizations.
Ms. Madden has worked extensively in healthcare and corporate settings and has consulted with a range of business and hospitals.
Mary Jane is a graduate of the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, Case Western Reserve in Cleveland and holds a Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Minnesota.
Unit 3 STRATEGIC PLANNING
Richard Slack
Richard Slack, Vice President, Strategy & Business Development, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix, Arizona, has over 25 years of experience directing all aspects of strategic planning, business development and marketing for major healthcare organizations.
He has directed the development of health service organizations as a senior executive as well as consultant and manager for a large consulting practice. His experience includes business development and marketing strategy for physician groups, academic medical centers, rural hospitals, for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals.
Rich currently serves as the Vice President Strategy and Business Development for St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, the largest private teaching hospital in Arizona, and a member of Catholic Healthcare West. Prior to his position at St. Joe's, Rich was with the Allina Health System in Minneapolis.
A frequent speaker and presenter on a range of health and health-related topics, he is professionally active and affiliated as a faculty member with graduate programs in Health Sciences Administration at the University of Minnesota and the University of Missouri-Columbia. Rich holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Nebraska and a Master's Degree with an emphasis in operations and marketing from the University of Missouri-Columbia, graduating with distinction.
Unit 4 MARKETING FOR HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS
Geoff Kaufmann

Geoff Kaufmann, is Vice President of Corporate Development for the Center for Diagnostic Imaging, a national provider of outpatient radiology services headquartered in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. In his 26 years in the healthcare field, Geoff has held variety of leadership positions including Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Health System Minnesota, Senior Associate Director at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic and Senior Consultant for Hamilton KSA, Inc.
An active member in the health care industry, Geoff serves on several local and national boards. Geoff has been an adjunct faculty member with ISP since 1979 and serves on the adjunct faculty at the University of St. Thomas Center for Health and Medical Affairs. Geoff's academic credentials include a Master's of Arts degree from the University of Chicago in Health Policy and Management and a Bachelor's of Arts degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
Unit 5 FINANCIAL STRATEGIES
Tom Schmitt
Thomas A. Schmitt, MHA currently serves as the Executive Lead of Business Support Services and Development for the HealthEast Care System's Woodwinds Health Campus in Woodbury Minnesota. In addition to several Woodwinds hospital operations responsibilities, Tom has responsibility for all new business and program development.
Prior to joining HealthEast Woodwinds Health Campus, Tom served in various corporate finance capacities including the Vice President of Revenue Management for the Fairview Health System.
Tom has over 20 years of healthcare experience and it a graduate of the ISP and University of Minnesota MHA program in 2006.
Unit 6 CAPITAL FINANCE
Tom Heckler
Thomas Heckler, has been CEO of OHSU Medical Group, the 500- provider faculty practice group serving the Oregon Health Sciences University Schools of Medicine and Nursing, since 1993. In this role, Mr. Heckler is responsible for overseeing clinical faculty efforts in managed care contracting, billing and collections, capitation and managed care reporting, as well as supporting system-wide initiatives in primary care development and the co-development of a Medicaid-only HMO in partnership with community-based providers.
Prior to this new position, Mr. Heckler was a Principal with Hamilton/KSA for 16 years. While with Hamilton, Mr. Heckler directed consultation efforts in all parts of the country for clients ranging form small rural hospitals and nursing homes to large metropolitan medical centers, multi-hospital systems and university teaching hospital systems and university teaching hospitals.
Heckler received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Economics from St. Olaf College (Minnesota). In 1975, he received his MBA in Finance and Management from Stanford University. In addition to being a faculty member for several ISP programs, Mr. Heckler has taught in Minnesota's Programs in Hospital and Health Care Administration, and serves as an instructor for a resident symposium in managed care at OHSU.
Mr. Heckler is a frequent speaker at board retreats and seminars, and at regional and national healthcare conferences. He has published articles on a wide variety of topics in journals such as Hospitals, Trustee, Hospital Progress, Healthcare Executive and Topics in Healthcare Financing.
Unit 7 MANAGING CARE
Jim Chase and Mark Tierney
Jim Chase

James Chase received his Master's degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota in 1983. He has worked in managed care operations and clinic management with Fairview Community Hospitals, United Health Care, and Health Risk Management.
Jim is currently Director of Health Care Purchasing for the State of Minnesota Department of Human Services where he is responsible for the managed care services offered under the state Medical Assistance, GAMC, and Minnesota Care Programs.
Mark W. Tierney is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Network Management Services. Under Mr. Tierney's direction, NMS, has grown into one of the industry leaders in the outsourcing of health plan management and administration.
Prior to funding NMS, Mr. Tierney founded HEALTHMARC, and served as its President and CEO for eight years. HEALTHMARC, today a subsidiary of United HealthCare Corporation, provides full-service patient advocacy and utilization review services for self-funded employers nationwide and has an annualized revenue base of approximately $30 million. He also served as Senior Vice President of Medical Services for Medica (now Allina), the Twin Cities largest HMO with both CIGNA Health Plans and Kaiser of southern California.
Mr. Tierney holds a Master's degree in Hospital and Health Care Administration from the University of Minnesota.
Unit 8 LEGAL ISSUES
David Feinwachs
David Feinwachs, received his M.H.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1978 and a second Master's degree in Medical Sociology in 1980. He was admitted to the Minnesota Bar in 1980 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1983. He also has a Ph.D. in Health Care Management, is a licensed nursing home administrator and Assistant Professor in Health Law at the University of Minnesota and St. Thomas College.
Unit 9 PHYSICIANS AND THE HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVE
Gary Schroeder
Gary Schroeder, MHA has held various administrative positions in ambulatory and acute care settings. He completed a Master's degree in Health Care Administration at the University of Minnesota in 1993 where he received the Sabra M. Hamilton award for the best research thesis. He also holds a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from the University of Nebraska.
