Mona Bormet

Originally from the Chicago area, Mona Bormet received her B.S. in Health Education from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. In May 2005, she graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (SPH) with an M.P.H. in Community Health Education (CHE). Through the SPH mentor program, Bormet met other Asian health professionals. Those connections helped her obtain a research assistantship for the Minnesota Asian/American Health Coalition.
Bormet says she is thankful for the flexibility of the CHE program because it allowed her to take a lot of electives and hone in on an area of interest. One of her favorite courses, Legislative Advocacy Skills enabled her to intern with the State Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans (CAPM). There, she worked at the Minnesota State Capitol, concentrating on issues and policies affecting Asian Pacific Minnesotans and other minorities.
Bormet spent the summer of 2005 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division for Health Disease and Stroke Prevention. There, she honed her research skills in areas of obesity, CVH, stroke and EMS response.
Currently, Bormet is obtaining first-hand experience with policymaking in our nation’s capitol. She is participating in a nine-month fellowship program via the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies in Washington D.C. The group is committed to the elimination of health disparities through health education and health policy.
