Admissions

Students admitted to the doctoral program hold advanced degrees in related fields. Individuals whose highest degree is a baccalaureate degree are encouraged to consider applying for one of our M.P.H. degrees. Applicants should have prior coursework in biological or behavioral sciences.

Also, because of this program’s strong emphasis on methodology, quantitative aptitude is essential and can be demonstrated by achieving a 70th percentile on the quantitative section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  In addition, strong grades in college-level courses such as statistics, algebra, calculus, or trigonometry are evaluated.  Further, because epidemiologists rely on publication of their results to disseminate public health information, excellent writing skills are desirable.

Ph.D. applicants are asked to submit both a personal essay and a proposed research statement.  The statement is intended for the applicant to demonstrate a strong interest in a specific epidemiologic area and, if possible, to indicate interest in particular methodologies or study designs.  Familiarity with the field is thus essential for successful application to the program. By the end of the first semester, if not before, admitted students should declare their choice of either the Clinical/Biological Epidemiology track or the Social/Behavioral Epidemiology track.

Preferred performance levels are:

  • GPA of 3.0
  • Composite GRE score of 1000, with a 3.5 on the AWA
  • TOEFL score of 600/250/100 (ibt) (international applicants only)

Application Process

Applicants must submit their application directly to SOPHAS, the centralized online application service.

The admissions application is not considered complete until all supporting documentation has been received.  Please plan ahead and pay special attention to the priority deadline of Dec. 15, 2008.  No exceptions will be made to this deadline.  All applications must be received by Feb. 15, 2008 for fall 2008.
