Pre-Licensure Courses

Student and InstructorThe Center for Aging Services Management currently offers a series of courses designed for persons entering the field of long term care (primarily nursing home administration). Most courses combine on-campus seminars, correspondence study (several written assignments), and final examinations.

PubH 6535 - Healthcare Services Accounting (3 cr) - Offered on-line in fall

This course is Board-approved for two areas of content:

Organizational Management; and
Human Resource Management

PubH 7580 - Organizational and HR Management in Long Term Care (4 credits) - Grant, Staff

This course is Board-approved for two areas of content:

Organizational Management; and
Human Resource Management

This course presents an overview of organizational management and human resource management in the long term care setting from the senior manager's perspective.

PubH 7581 - Gerontology and Services for Long Term Care Residents (2 to 4 credits) - Grant, Staff

This course is Board-approved for two areas of content:

Long Term Care Services; and
Gerontology

The long term care services segment deals with the needs of, and programs for, elderly in nursing facilities. The gerontology segment deals with key aspects of adult development and human aging (e.g., biology, psychology, and sociology of aging).

PubH 7582 - Practicum in Long Term Care (4 credits) - Grant and preceptors (See prerequisites.)

The Practicum provides an opportunity to apply knowledge to the practice of long term care administration under the guidance of a preceptor. This Board-approved course begins three times a year (call Center office to find out exact dates) and includes a maximum of 400 hours. (The actual number of required hours in each case is determined by the Licensure Board.) Arrangements must be initiated with the Center at least eight weeks prior to the beginning date for a specific offering of the practicum.

PubH 7584 - Health Care and Medical Needs (2 credits) - Meiches, Staff

This course covers the differentiation between the aging process and the disease process, as well as common conditions and diseases associated with aging.

PubH 7587 - Regulatory Management in Long Term Care (2 to 4 credits) - Grant, Staff

This course covers the funding mechanisms, regulatory compliance mechanisms, and legal provisions currently in force for the long-term care industry.

PubH 7588 - Information Uses in Long Term Care (2 credits) - Potthoff, Staff

This course will cover the accumulation and analysis of data to inform management decision-making in long-term care with special emphasis on quality improvement tools and methods.
