Kenneth Jones 2003 MHA

DIRECTOR OF NEUROSCIENCES AND ORTHOPEDICS
ST. VINCENT'S HOSPITAL
JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

Kenneth Jones 2003 MHAKen Jones considered several universities for combined MHA and MBA degrees, but the opportunities to network with Minnesota alumni impressed him the most. "Minnesota has a very prestigious health care management program," he said. "Just looking at the graduates and what they’re doing made it attractive."

Hands-on curriculum was another benefit. "The practical experience at Minnesota gave me real-world examples of healthcare problems," he said. "Working with professionals in the area to solve those problems was an added plus." In a group project with Fairview Hospitals, Ken worked with physicians, administrators, nurses and others to determine the feasibility of building an observational unit. Recommendations presented to senior management helped formulate a long-term plan.

A healthcare mentor helped guide Ken’s professional development, while alumni networking led to an internship in Georgia and a fellowship at Duke. "Every time I get the opportunity," said Ken, "I tell students why Minnesota has the best program in the U.S."
