Preparation

Preparing You to Meet the Demands of Leadership

Minnesota's renowned "problem-solving" methodology requires students to apply proven business-based solutions to today's healthcare issues. Mastering this interdisciplinary approach will teach you to think in creative new ways while fostering essential team-building skills. You leave the program ready to anticipate, innovate and meet challenges with confidence—the true test of leadership.

The Minnesota Leadership Edge, a comprehensive professional development program, composed of assessment, feedback and coaching, provides Minnesota MHA graduates with a customized leadership edge that is unmatched in Healthcare Administration Programs.

In fall 2007 the Minnesota MHA Program introduced three new required courses that answer the call for innovative leadership in healthcare education.

  • PUBH 6565 - Health Care Delivery Design and Innovation. Designing/creating health care delivery services/experiences. Innovation process, methodologies/tools of innovation design, strategies/processes to ensure execution. Taught by Ayse P Gurses (Twin Cities) and Ryan R Armbruster (Rochester).
  • PUBH 6568 - Interprofessional Teamwork in Health Care. Leading/participating in interdisciplinary teams. Team communication, problem solving, conflict management, organizational support. Taught by Gordon Mosser, MD.
  • PUBH 6727 - Health Leadership and Effecting Change. Applications of a broad theoretical base in planned change to solve  managerial/organizational problems in health professions. Taught by James W. Begun.

For information on these new courses contact the Health Policy and Management Program Offices at 612-624-8818.

MHA students have many opportunities to "show their stuff" and work with students from other disciplines. One way is through case competitions. The University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management sponsors a New Product/Venture Case Writing Competition, organized by the school's Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. The competition foruses on new ventures and products by Minnesota companies. The  CLARION Case Competition, started as a local venue for interdisciplinary healthcare teams to learn to problem-solve together, has grown into a national event. The National Association of Health Service Executives sponsors the  Everett V. Fox Case Competition, also a national event.
