Public Health Medicine

Welcome to the 2009 Public Health Medicine class.  We are excited to have you!

This page is JAM-PACKED with information. This is not a joke.

One Stop Website

Your one-stop shop for class schedules, registration, student financial account and financial aid, tuition and fees, and grade information.  If you can not find something please call or e-mail me.

Create your U of MN internet account

  1. You will need your student id (included in your letter of admission from the PHP Major), ssn, and birthdate.

You will be given your internet id (sometimes referred to as your x.500) and be asked to create your password.

Your internet id and password are the keys to accessing your student financial, registration and e-mail accounts.  The internet id also serves as the first part of your e-mail address.  Please let me know if you have any problems with the initiation!

  2. Use your internet id and newly created password to check your U of MN e-mail.

Please check your U of MN e-mail frequently. This is the official means of communication for the U of MN.  We will send all correspondence to this account.

    • Check UMN E-mail

      Immunizations

You will need to be compliant with the AHC immunization requirements by the end of October, 2009.

If you are coming from UMD or UMTC medical schools, you should already be compliant.

      Health Insurance

All Academic Health Center (AHC) students will be automatically enrolled in the University Sponsored Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield.  The charges will be added to your fee statement. The cost of the plan is $1098 per semester for the 2008-2009 academic year. 2009-2010 rates are not yet available.

      Summer coverage costs $596.00 and provides coverage May 18, 2009 - August 23, 2009.

You may petition to waive the plan if you are eligible.*  The waiver is good for two years.

    • * The request for a waiver must be submitted by June 15th.

    • Even if you enter your insurance information at the time of registration, you will have to go through the petition process. Sorry!

If you have questions, please send an e-mail to studins@bhs.umn.edu or call 612-624-0627.

Summer 2009

All of your summer 2009 courses will be online.  These will include at least four of the six core courses required of all MPH students in the School of Public Health.

A sample schedule and a schedule of all online core courses are attached to this e-mail.  Please note that you must register for at least four core courses this summer.  Those marked with ** are required for the summer, please choose at least one more.  The courses and the five digit class numbers are listed below.

The six core courses are:
PubH 6020          Fundamentals of Social and Behavioral Science (3), class number 87276
PubH 6102**      Issues in Environmental and Occupational Health (2), class number 85100
PubH 6320**      Fundamentals of Epidemiology (3), class number 89002
PubH 6414**      Biostatistical Methods I (3), class number 88992
PubH 6741/42*   Ethics in Public Health: Professional Practice & Policy (1), class number 88996 OR
PubH 6742          Ethics in Public Health: Research & Policy (1), class number 88998
PubH 6751          Principles of Management in Health Services Organizations (2), class number 96422

*You only need to take one of the ethics courses.
**must be taken during summer term.

PubH 6299 Public Health as a Team Sport: the Power of Collaboration (1.5), class number 89004

A required course offered during the annual Public Health Institute. This may be completed at the beginning OR end of your curriculum sequence. It is for only MPH students in the following programs: Executive Program in Public Health Practice, Veterinary Public Health, Public Health Medicine, and Maternal and Child Health distance program. This year the course will take place Saturday May 30th and Sunday May 31st.  This course has required pre-assignments; please visit the website for more information.

PubH 7296 Field Experience (3 credits) and PubH 7294 Master's Project (3 credits)

You may register for these courses at any time during your year with us. The advantage to registering for these credits for summer is that you will be paying the 2009-2010 tuition rates. The rates will likely rise for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Please be sure to check with Rockne Bergman (r-berg@umn.edu), the financial aid officer for the SPH, to see if/how this will affect your financial aid.

Please note that you will not be required to complete these courses during the term of registration.  Instead, you will be awarded a grade of 'K' which indicates that the courses are ongoing.

You will need permission numbers in order to register for the master's project and field experience credits.  You can obtain permission numbers at orientation, so don't worry about this for now.  Space is not an issue.

Public Health Institute

A three-week institute that takes place during May session (2009 dates: 5/26-6/12) can be a great source for electives.  The PHI takes place annually.  This year it will offer approximately 45 short courses, anywhere from .5 - 2 credits and from 1.5 days to two weeks.

The courses offer cutting-edge knowledge and cover a variety of subjects. Some courses offer tuition support opportunities.

Fall 2009

Your fall 2009 registration will include the remaining two core courses (if you elect not to take them over the summer) and elective credits you take based on your theme of interest.

Required Courses

Here is the registration information for the online versions of the core courses for fall:

PubH 6020 Fundamentals of Social and Behavioral Sciences (3), class number 35953
PubH 6320 Fundamentals of Epidemiology (3), class number 35853
PubH 6414 Biostatistical Methods I (3), class number 25385
PubH 6741 Ethics in PH: Professional Practice & Policy (1), class number 41257 OR
PubH 6742 Ethics in PH: Research & Policy (1), class number 41261

You may choose to take the in-person version of the course. See the Class Schedule for registration information.

Elective Credits

Electives are arranged around a theme of interest.  Established themes of interest include
Maternal & Child Health
International Health
Occupational & Environmental Health
Infectious Disease
Clinical Preventive Practice
Nutrition
Design your own theme in consultation with your adviser

Within your theme, you will choose one course each from four different types of public health functions: public policy evaluation and implementation, primary prevention interventions, epidemiologic analysis of specific health problems, and management of health care organizations.

Dr. Lohman, the PHM program director, will serve as your academic adviser.  He will be available to discuss your theme of interest and elective credits at the program orientation in May (date/time to be determined ¿ see below).

You may choose to register for elective credits until the orientation. If you don¿'t wait, you can always make changes afterward.

A working list of electives that apply to the different themes of interest can be found on the Program Tools website.  These courses are by no means your only choices. There are many more public health courses out there.  In fact, any graduate level course offered through any college or school within the U of MN may be used as an elective - just be sure to get it approved beforehand.

To see a listing of all courses, descriptions and when they are offered, you may wish to check out the University Catalogs online.

Be sure to double-check with the Class Schedule or department to confirm the term(s) offered as that information can change quite frequently.

Feel free to contact me or Dr. Lohman if you have any questions about this.
