Presented by Harry Lando, PhD
Distinguished International Professor
Division of Epidemiology and Community Health
This presentation will consider the global tobacco epidemic, the role of the tobacco industry, and tools to combat the epidemic including the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. I will summarize the 50-year history of the World Conferences on Tobacco OR Health (WCTOH) including both successes and limitations. I will discuss the recently concluded 17th WCTOH, which will have taken place in Cape Town, South Africa, March 7-9, 2018. I will address questions of how to increase the impact of the conferences in order to produce a lasting legacy. How to effectively engage researchers and apply research findings. How to attract and activate multiple constituencies both within and beyond traditional stakeholders. How to create and maintain effective strategies to advance tobacco control and bend the curve of the epidemic in the face of concerted opposition from the tobacco industry.
All faculty, staff, and students welcome! Light refreshments will be served.
