Nutrition Coordinating Center
(NCC)
The Nutrition Coordinating Center develops, provides, and
supports state-of-the-art methods and databases for researchers collecting and
analyzing dietary data.
The NCC Nutrition Data System for Research (NDS-R) software is
designed primarily for the assessment of dietary intake in clinical research
and epidemiological studies investigating relationships between diet and
health. The center has been recognized as a research resource by the National
Institutes of Health, and the NDS-R software has been used by countless
researchers.
The software can be used for the collection and analysis of:
- 24-hour recalls
- Food records
- Menus
- Recipes
The NCC also maintains an extensive database of food and
nutrient information for a large number of food products. Updated and released
annually, the current database version includes values for 136 nutrients,
nutrient ratios, and other food components for more than 18,000 foods.
Linked to the database, the NDS-R interview system
integrates the multiple-pass interview methodology, provides for direct data
entry, captures the level of detail required for highly accurate nutrient
analysis, and calculates nutrients as data are collected. A highly flexible
food grouping system designed for use with NDS-R dietary intake data is now
available to add a further dimension to the food and nutrient analysis
capability of the software.
Additional NCC services include:
- Assistance with protocol development
- Dietary interviewer training and certification
- Data processing and quality assurance of dietary intake
data
- Collection of dietary recalls per telephone
- Food group serving counts
- Recipe and menu analysis
