James Begun, PhD

Professor Emeritus, Division of Health Policy & Management

Summary

In my scholarly research, I study the structure, strategy, and performance of health care and public health organizations and professions. Where possible, I utilize a complexity science perspective to better understand those topics. My work includes the books, Leading Public Health, with Jan Malcolm, and Understanding Teamwork in Health Care, with Gordon Mosser.

I have been active in promoting competency-based education, serving several terms on and chairing the Board of Commissioners of the Accrediting Commission on Education in Health Services Administration (now the Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education). In the Carlson School and the School of Public Health, I taught a variety of health care and organizational leadership and management courses. I retired from the tenured faculty in 2021.
