National Public Health Week Film Festival

April 7 - 11, 2008

You are invited to the School of Public Health's 4th Annual Film Festival!

In recognition of National Public Health Week, the SPH, its community partners, and the Minnesota Public Health Association are offering free films about public health issues.

All screenings will be in the renovated Mayo Memorial Auditorium on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus.


Monday, April 7

Environmental Health theme
Mayo Memorial Auditorium
6:15 p.m.

We will be showing A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash. It is a 90-minute documentary that tells the story of how our civilization's addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with geology.

Speaker: Dr. Lanny Schmidt, a Regents Professor from the University of Minnesota Chemical Engineering/Material Substance program, will introduce the film and lead a 15 minute Q&A discussion.

Global Health theme

We will be showing ¡Salud!, which examines how the cash-strapped country of Cuba has become "one of the world's best health systems."

Speaker: August Nimtz, professor of political science at the University of Minnesota, will introduce film and lead a 15 minute Q&A discussion.

Wednesday, April 9

Health Disparities theme
Mayo Memorial Auditorium
5:30 p.m.

We will being showing two episodes of Unnatural Causes, a new PBS documentary that examines America's socio-economic and racial inequities in health.

The two episodes are:

1. In Sickness and In Wealth (56 mins)
What are the connections between healthy bodies and healthy bank accounts?

2. Becoming American (28 min) R

Recent Mexican immigrants, though often poorer, tend to be healthier than the average American. But the longer they live here, the worse their relative health becomes. What's protective about new immigrant communities that we can all learn from? And what erodes this shield over time?

Speakers: Health Commissioner Sanne Magnan, Minnesota Department of Health, will introduce the film. Michael Oakes, associate professor of epidemology at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, will lead a 15 minute Q&A discussion.


Friday, April 11

Sexual Health theme
Mayo Memorial Auditorium
5:30 p.m.

We will be showing Sex Ed and the State, which is a look at the Minnesota's state legislature and the fate of a comprehensive sexuality education bill. Vintage sex ed films will also be screened.

Speaker: Jim Winkle, School of Public Health Alumnus, director of "Sex Ed & the State," will introduce the film and lead a 15 minute Q&A discussion.
