School of Public Health students Spencer Cahoon (MHA) and Noureldin Saad (MHA) are among a team of University of Minnesota students that placed third in the 2017 Emory International Global Health Case Competition—the best any U of M team has ever performed in this competition. They competed against 23 teams from the US, Canada, Denmark, and Australia.
The team’s case addressed mental health challenges in children living in Liberia. Liberia has recently been through two civil wars over 14 years and a recent Ebola epidemic resulting in an abnormally high mental health prevalence. Their recommendation was to address stigma around mental health through support from families, educating community leaders, and involving the culture of the community through arts and music. SPH Assistant Professor Linda Frizzell was the team coach.
