Global Health Institute: An Immersion Experience for One Health
August 1-15, 2010
4 credits

The world is interconnected politically, financially, biologically and socially.  It is also connected through trade, travel and commerce.  All of these factors power the convergence of animal, human and environmental health.  One Health is about working collaboratively across disciplines and professions because it is no longer possible to focus on any single domain of health without impacting and including others.

This intensive study abroad opportunity will focus on zoonotic disease, global public health concepts and practices, participatory epidemiology and applied biostatistics within the framework of One Health.  The course is held in collaboration with the School of Public Health at Makerere University, in Kampala, Uganda.

A limited number of travel stipends are available.

Field Experience Opportunities:
Available to students interested in extending their stay before or after the program.  For more information contact Anne Ehrenberg or call 612-624-6638.

Faculty:
Debra Olson leads the expert faculty team for this offering which includes University of Minnesota faculty from the Schools of Public Health and Nursing and the College of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University, and faculty members from Makerere University and health organizations in Uganda.

Students:
In addition to University of Minnesota graduate students, students from the School of Public Health and other health science programs at Makerere University and other African universities in this region will also participate in the class.

Field Excursion:
The course includes a three-day cultural immersion experience through rural Uganda for a visit to a district community health clinic and a Ugandan national park to explore the intersection of wildlife and human health concerns related to zoonotic disease and economic sustainability.

Course objectives:
By the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define One Health and identify the key elements of this concept.
  • Identify critical skills and knowledge needed to improve health at the interface of human, animal and environmental health.
  • Describe examples of the convergence of human, animal and environmental health through case studies with a focus on emerging zoonotic diseases and disease outbreak response and control in humans, livestock and wildlife.
  • Define health from multicultural perspectives.
  • Describe ways public health systems are constructed, funded, implemented and evaluated to meet the needs of individuals, families and communities in high resource and low resource countries.
  • Identify issues related to land conservation and wildlife management and their relationship to human, domestic livestock, and environmental health
  • Develop surveillance and response infectious disease strategies focused by community engagement and participation.
  • Analyze case studies in infectious and chronic disease outbreaks, surveillance and response using applied biostatistic methods and tools.
