Greetings SPH mentors and student mentees, Thank you for your participation in the SPH Mentor Program! For those of you who were able to attend the kick-off event last week, we’re glad you left with some tips and ideas to help nurture your mentor relationship.
For those who were unable to attend, the session included a warm "Welcome" to the program from Dean John Finnegan, and a panel discussion featuring past mentors and students, who shared their experiences and advice about mentor relationships. Some of the suggestions included:
- Learn from the different perspective your student or mentor takes on an issue…
- Remain open to activities, events, and locations to meet and get to know your mentor or student…
- Not only can students learn a great deal about public health from their mentor, but mentors can benefit from students’ knowledge of current public health issues covered in classes and seminars…
- You get out of the relationship what you put into it!
These are only a few of the many insights the panelists gave for developing a successful mentoring relationship! In addition to these great tips, attached to this e-mail you’ll find a tool to help both mentors and students set goals for your relationship. And, students: stop by the SPH Student Services Office (D-305 Mayo) to pick-up a SPH journal, pencil, and a welcome packet for you and your mentor.
"Thank you" to the four Mentor Program Kick-off Event panelists:
From the mentor perspective:
Michael Olesen and Ellie Ulrich Zuehlke And, from the student perspective:
Jooyeon Hwang and Andrea Johnson A note to students:
If you have not connected with your mentor yet, please contact him or her to set up a time for the two of you to meet. Students and mentors: If you have neither received information about your match nor been contacted by the program, please email phmentor@umn.edu or call 612-624-7121. We encountered a database glitch that is nearly, but not completely, resolved. Thank you!
Best wishes for a rewarding mentor relationship,
