This prestigious fellowship program offers opportunities for graduate students to work in federal government. Boney’s placement will be at the Indian Health Services headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. She will spend the next two years working in different offices in DHHS. Liz Habermann’s master’s thesis was recently published in the journal Medical Care. Title: The impact of a change in Medicare reimbursement policy and HEDIS measures on stage at diagnosis among Medicare HMO and fee-for-service female breast cancer patients. Habermann is a doctoral student in the division of Health Policy and Management. Would you like a unique chance to experience clinical research training in a developing country? The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Fogarty International Center is offering a one-year clinical research training experience for graduate-level U.S. students in the health professions. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in developing countries. Africa, Asia, and the Americas are regions of the world that, if accepted, you may find yourself experiencing. Applications due Dec. 14, 2007. SPH Orientation and Warm-Up sessions are this week! Students can choose which events you would like to attend. Please remember that you must attend the SPH School-wide Orientation as well as your Major Orientation on Aug. 23 (more info on that below). Each additional event will give you a great opportunity to meet more of your classmates and learn valuable information about the school. Please also take a moment to complete a short survey to assist us in making this a great orientation session. New course--Refugee Health: Trauma, Stress & Coping. This course will address war, displacement, and associated stressors affecting psychosocial health of refugees. Focus on pre and post migration experiences, family and community dynamics, and approaches to support and recovery. The purpose of this course is to develop the insight and skills to create innovative community-based approaches to support refugee psychosocial health. Dates: 9/22/07, 10/17/07 & 12/11/0. PubH 6085--Prevention and Control of Tobacco and Alcohol Problems--will be offered in fall 2007 on Wednesdays, from 9:05 a.m.-12:05 p.m., in Mayo Building, room 1250. The course specifically focuses on policy, community, and individual level strategies to reduce the burden of tobacco and alcohol problems locally, nationally, and globally. Similarities and differences in public health approaches to tobacco and alcohol prevention and control will also be discussed along with similarities and differences in alcohol and tobacco industry practices. The course includes a variety of formats: lectures, group discussion, debates, student presentations, and field trips.
