Faculty newsLynn Blewett was elected to the National Academy of Social Insurance, a non-profit, non-partisan group comprised of the country's leading experts on social insurance. The organization strives to promote understanding and informed policymaking on social insurance and related programs through training, research, and public education. Jon Christianson was appointed as the chair of AcademyHealth's 2007 Annual Research Meeting to be held in Orlando, Fla. June 3-5. John Nyman was featured as a panelist on the Twin Cities Public Television program Remaking Minnesota Medicine earlier this month. The afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 30 will be the time for an event celebrating the Award for Global Engagement that has been given to Harry Lando. SPH faculty, staff, and students invited. More details to come in SPH News. Funding Opportunity: SPH Small Grants. The Minnesota Medical Foundation has designated $50,000 for this year's SPH small grants program. The SPH research committee will award individual grants of up to $25,000 each. For a copy of the application materials or examples of successful proposals, please e-mail reink001@umn.edu. The application deadline is Nov. 28. Please hold 9:15-10:45 a.m. of Friday, Dec. 8, for this year's tenured faculty meeting for voting on documentation for promotion and tenure. The meeting will be held in 1250 Mayo. Documentation will be available for faculty review for approximately one week prior to the meeting. Make plans to attend two panel discussions from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. 31 in Mayo A-301. You'll hear from other SPH students about how they found and financed their field experience, and what they learned from it. Open House for Prospective Students. The Division of Health Policy and Management is sponsoring an open house for prospective students from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, in room D-330 Mayo. Learn more about this event. CLARION presents Friday Night in the ER. Take part or watch other AHC students participate in a simulation board game that resembles the challenging decisions a team has to make in an emergency department setting. The game is set during a typical 24-hour period and is led by a professional facilitator. CLARION is an interprofessional organization within the Center for Health Interprofessional Programs (CHIP) that seeks to develop future health care leaders. School newsInternational health issues and human rights will be the focus of the 2007 SPH Roundtable Series. Each year, the SPH sponsors the roundtables to connect faculty research to pressing public health issues. First up in this year's series is the presentation, "International HIV/AIDS and Human Rights," taking place in recognition of World AIDS Day on Friday, Dec. 1, 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Featured speakers are SPH professor Alan Lifson and Steven Miles, Medical School. SPH deans John Finnegan and Debra Olson will provide opening remarks. The roundtable is free but registration is encouraged. Learn more and/or register for the Roundtable. Stay tuned for these 2007 SPH Roundtables, with featured SPH faculty: Frank Cerra has scheduled his annual SPH visit for 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30 in room 1-450 Moos Tower. (Refreshments will be served from 2:45 to 3 p.m. before the meeting begins.) Cerra, senior vice president for health sciences at the University of Minnesota, will share an overview of a presentation he's preparing for the University of Minnesota Board of Regents, focusing on how to achieve success in the health sciences. He wishes to get feedback on his strategic plan. In January 2007, he will present his annual "State of the AHC." Lynn Blewett is featured this week on the SPH podcast "Public Health Moment." Blewett comments on the key health issues in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Public Health Moment is a weekly 90-second podcast produced by the school. Listen to it and other SPH podcasts by going to www.sph.umn.edu/podcast. More than 100 high school and undergraduate students attended "Pathways to Public Health" on Oct. 20. The event was a chance for students to learn about the diverse graduate degree options and career opportunities that exist in the field of pubic health. SPH faculty, major coordinators, and alumni offered information and answered questions about the school's 11 different majors. The event was sponsored by the SPH and the University's Health Careers Center. Join the SPH at APHA. The American Public Health Association annual meeting will be in Boston Nov 4-8. The Midwest States Health Reform Summit will take place Tuesday, Nov. 14, 8 a.m.. to 5 p.m., at the Depot in downtown Minneapolis. Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (invited) will discuss policy options available to the states as well as states' capacity to be innovative in addressing health care problems. The event is hosted by the State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC) and the National Institute of Health Policy. "The Relationship of Science and Politics in Environmental Policy Making: Can This Marriage Be Saved?" will be presented by Holly Doremus, University of California, Davis, on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m., in the Coffman Memorial Union Theater.
