The Philippines - School of Public Health Advances at the University of Minnesota

Philipines and Minnesota
Our School has a 10-year friendship with the College of Public Health (CPH) at the University of the Philippines in Manila. SPH professor Ian Greaves has interacted with public health faculty in the Philippines during this period, and from 1998 to 2004 he was principal investigator on a Fogarty training grant from the National Institutes of Health that led to 22 Filipinos receiving specialty training in the United States, and four research projects initiated in the Philippines.

Our visit there was highlighted by a meeting with CPH faculty with whom we discussed various ways in which our two schools might collaborate..Faculty Stroll in Manila

The Philippines is experiencing a critical shortage of health care and public health workers, as many young people are choosing to receive training elsewhere and work outside the country for higher wages. The need for enhanced public health education and training is acute

It is time to build on our rich history in the Philippines. That intention was formalized with an agreement SPH Dean John Finnegan signed with University of the Philippines Chancellor Dr. Ramon Arcadio.
