General Objectives, School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota

General Objectives

  • Increase the confidence and ability of students in assessing their strengths and weaknesses as members of a public health team.

  • Allow for integration of theory and practice in an agency setting; they are a joint venture between the Major in Public Health and the field agency.

  • Participate in activities of programs external to the University adds a dimension of experience to the curriculum that enriches the student's training and may be beneficial in seeking employment.

  • Exposure to the political, economical, social and organizational context within which public heath activities conducted.

  • Recognize the role of politics and the steps in development of legislation.

  • Provide opportunities for personal involvement in developing, planning, executing, and evaluating activities with and for professional and nonprofessional groups and individuals.

  • Understand how health departments operate.

  • Conduct community needs assessment.

  • Administer existing or develop programs in the area of public health.

  • Learn how to develop community partnerships.
