The Environmental Health graduate programs are organized into three teaching cores. Students take a required course in each area: environmental exposures, health effects, and environmental health policy.

Both the M.P.H and M.S. programs require a minimum of 30 credits and normally take two years to complete.

Specialty Requirements
Additional required and elective courses are determined by area of study within the Environmental Health major. Students may elect a general program in environmental and occupational health, or focus in one of the following specialty areas:

  • Environmental Chemistry (MS only)
  • Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology
  • Environmental Health Policy
  • Environmental Infectious Diseases
  • Environmental Toxicology
  • Industrial Hygiene
  • Occupational Health Nursing
  • Occupational Medicine (Occupational medicine residents only)

Required coursework for the EH major, specialty requirements, and electives will allow students to tailor programs to match their interests. In addition, MS degree students may designate a minor field to complement the environmental health major.

PhD students may pursue one of three training programs:

  • Molecular basis of risk assessment, which provides trans-disciplinary training in exposure, modern toxicology, epidemiology, and environmental policy that is required to develop sound health risk assessment approaches.
  • Occupational health services research and policy, which is a joint offering by the Divisions of Environmental and Occupational Health and Health Services Research and Policy. EOH students receive a minor in health services research, policy and administration.
  • Occupational injury prevention research training, which incorporates advanced training through curriculum and trainee research opportunities that involve multidisciplinary collaborations with experts in occupations injury epidemiology, engineering and human factors/ergonomics, safety, medicine, and the social sciences including occupational psychology.
