Jeremy Edes Pierotti 1998 MHAWhile working in Washington, D.C., on health policy in the U.S. Senate, Jeremy Pierotti became interested in hands-on healthcare management as he saw provider organizations promote real improvements in community health. After looking at programs and getting recommendations, he chose Minnesota because "I liked the idea they were working so closely with Twin Cities payors and providers throughout the curriculum. Projects are driven by the real needs of organizations, not just what was in textbooks."

Pierotti’s student projects provided analyses and recommendations to host organizations--but weren’t just make-work practice. "It was interesting to see the decisions that were made, or retrospectively, the decisions that were being re-evaluated," said Pierotti. Some of the projects Pierotti worked on included a marketing analysis for 3M, a differential hospitalization cost analysis of patient groups, physician referrals, and an analysis of provider contracting for a major health plan. He said "It was good exposure to different healthcare organizations and the different types of challenges that they faced."

For Pierotti, the small classes and personalized experience of the program continued with individualized placement for residency, fellowships, and jobs. For his summer residency "I knew I wanted experience with a large non-profit health system." His residency at Abbott Northwestern Hospital paved the way for a fellowship with Allina, Abbott’s parent organization.

Pierotti now is Co-Owner and Principal of a healthcare consulting firm based in the Twin Cities specializing in operations improvement, project management, and information systems implementation for healthcare providers.
