Field Experience, School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota

Field Experience

All Public Health Nutrition M.P.H. students are required to participate in a field experience.  The purpose is to provide students with the opportunity to practice and apply their knowledge and skills in a practice-based setting.  The broad goals are to help public health nutrition students strengthen their philosophy and understanding of public health and to identify themselves as professionals in public health.

Examples of field experience placements include:

  • Extension Services, Hennepin/Ramsey Counties
  • FoodShare, MN
  • HealthPartners Nutrition Services, MN
  • March of Dimes, MN
  • St. Paul Ramsey Nutrition Program, MN
  • RAP Head Start, MN
  • Open Arms of Minnesota
  • Methodist Eating Disorders Institute, MN
  • Minnesota Department of Health

Description

Each Public Health Nutrition M.P.H. student works with the public health nutrition field faculty advisor, Dr. Bea Krinke.  In cooperation with the field experience faculty advisor and the field preceptor, objectives and learning activities are developed along with evaluation criteria.  The field experience faculty advisor provides guidance related to academic and curricular topics during the project and assures that the field experience meets the requirements for the public health nutrition program standards and competencies.  The field preceptor provides consultation and guidance in their area of expertise in particular and contributes to the evaluation of the student’s performance.

Selection of Field Experience Sites

Students determine their field experience site in consultation with the field experience faculty advisor. The site must meet the student's stated educational objectives and provide for a preceptor who can be an effective role model for public health nutrition knowledge and skills.
